Letterboxd — Your life in film

"LOOK AT MY SHIT!"

Here's a more fitting title: "Meh: The Mediocre and Uninspired"

While having experienced a vaguely similar situation certainly adds to my instant falling in love with this movie, I probably would have called "Before Sunrise" nothing short of a romantic masterpiece anyway (that would be the good kind of romantic, minus the kitsch, the clichés, Katherine Heigl, and all the other annoying stuff).

Everyone and their mother kept telling the world that this movie features a breakout performance by Elisabeth Olsen - and they were right! Her portrait of a young, scared and confused woman that has escaped a cult is truly amazing and utterly believable. The film itself is quiet, atmospheric and beautifully shot - yet there's always a creepy undertone to it that constantly hints at a looming, intangible danger.
