Zoo 2007 ★★★★

Watched Mar 11, 2012

Have you ever had one of those Sunday afternoons when you just can't decide what film to watch and then before you know it your viewing a documentary that revolves around the story of a man who was killed whilst having sexual relations with a horse? I have and I have no regrets. This beautifully made documentary gives us a glimpse into the world of zoophilia and does so in a surprisingly captivating and respectful way, the film never condemns or criticizes the people whose sexual orientation leans more towards non humans but instead lets them talk openly so we can at least gain some understanding of this taboo subject and for that I applaud.

  • Great first line! I got a good laugh out of that.

  • Thank you :)

  • Awesome review, I found this documentary to be much more insightful and poignant than I expected.
However I HAVE to ask.... have you seen the video that this is about? I watched it right after I saw this movie. WOW lol. It's called 2 guys 1 horse, don't worry you don't see him die, it happens off camera (although i dunno why I'm even bothering to tell you this because I don't really recommend anyone seeing it unless you're deathly curious.)

  • Thank you. This documentary was more than enough to satisfy my curiosity on the subject so I'm pleased to say I've never had the urge to watch the 2 guys 1 horse video. Speaking of sick and twisted things that's an excellent list of "Disturbing Horror Cinema" you've done, I'm tempted to watch a few of those.

  • :-) aw thank you so much! It's one of my more obscene hobbies lol. I can't get enough of the disgusting and obscure. If you want to know anything about any of them I'd be glad to answer any of your questions about content or availability. Which ones were you interested in?

  • I use to be a big fan of sick twisted disturbing cinema (I've mellowed a little in my old age) so I'm familiar with most of the films on the list. I was wondering if "The Angels’ Melancholia" is worth watching? I've heard it's very disturbing but my main worry is the 165 min runtime.

  • That is an excellent movie to be asking about! It has an international shipping restriction, I had to order it from a shady Austrian site that was recommended to me by a close friend. #1: Melancholie Der Engel has no English subtitles. There is not a version that exists that has them, so if you want to see it you won't understand any dialogue (but honestly I have had it translated and it makes very little difference). #2: It is VILE. Disturbing barely describes this one, it involves animal torture, copraphilia and plenty of rape. Given the obscenely disconcerting content of the film I wouldn't recommend it to anyone except the most adventurous of freaks. #3: It is extremely artsy. Lot's of strange cuts and shots, very weird and difficult to understand (not in plot but just in general) It's almost as if the entire movie was shot in the style of the acid trip in Easy Rider. If you don't have an iron stomach, you might puke, and if you don't have indeterminate patience, any purpose the movie has will be lost. The running time is the least of your worries. It's hard enough just to get your hands on it, nevermind sitting through the whole thing.

  • I would watch Cannibal first. If you dig it and want more, then go for the gold :-)

  • thanks for the info, your #3 actually really appeals to me, it's the artsy elements that I'm drawn to but I'm a little put off by #1 & #2, I'll have to see how I feel at a latter date, I occasionally go though dark phases and maybe I'll look into watching Cannibal first. thanks for the help

  • no problem! Any time :-)
