The Real England

A slice of life from good old England

  • How about a bit of middle class - Enduring Love or Archipelago perhaps...?

  • I've not see either of those, are they grim and gritty middle class? not sure I could relate otherwise.

  • Well there's a bit of grit (and gore!) in Enduring Love, but I didn't know that was a requirement for the list. What is "The Real England" anyway? Trying to think of a decent upper class pick... ?

  • I was thinking more of the gritty grim down to earth working class depressing side of England, it's the only England I know.

  • Ah, Misery porn! How about Control ?

  • I think you need to look at classic sixties British realist cinema, things like The Loneliness of Long Distance Runner and Saturday Night and Sunday Monday. Much better 'slice of life' dramas than Made In Britain and Scum etc (as in they actually represent a majority).

  • I guess misery porn would be a fitting description lol, Control fits the bill, thanks for your input.

I forgot about Loneliness of the long distance runner, great film, thanks for the reminder, I'm yet to see Night and Sunday Monday, i'll add it to my watch list.

  • I've got a pile of flipside blu-ray's to watch, your probably right about most of them but some of them do tend to get a bit weird, Moon over the alley is fairly gritty but when a couple of cool black dudes start singing about drinking cocoa things start getting a little surreal.

I'm yet to see the others you mentioned unfortunately.

  • Just remembered I still haven't seen London to Brighton. Is that suitable you reckon?

  • Still think a lot of this is more a certain type of England. Where is Brassed Off?

  • Great list! I think Misery Porn could be its own list, really, there's lots of good entries for that, not only the UK variety :)

  • @Richard I'm also yet to see London to Brighton.

@ Ross yes I guess the list does lean more to the darker side of England, I probably should have specified this in the description, I've lived in some shitty areas over the years so my idea of the "Real" England is probably a little more pessimistic than most, I just can't relate to the feel good stuff, I watch Lopushansky's films to cheer myself up:)

  • You missed 3 i can count Rita,Sue and Bob too! , My Beautiful Laundrette and Quadrophenia. I'm from England and i'v probably been in some of the same shitty places, that's why i watch other kinds of movies, to forget them for abit but otherwise great list i'm sure there may be more tho, just can't think at the mo.

  • Thanks for the suggestions I've added Rita Sue.... , your probably right about the other 2 as well, unfortunately I've never seen Quadrophenia, I'll add it to my watch list, I'm sure I've seen My Beautiful Laundrette I just have very little recollection of it.
