Cosmopolis 2012 ★★★★

Watched Aug 27, 2012

This sure was an interesting puzzle to sit through. Simultaneously very absorbing in its unpredictability and very distancing with its alienating dialogue, this is definitely Cronenberg returning to his bizarro roots, and that's something to celebrate in and of itself... but this is so very dense with mystery, and so deliberate with off-putting pretension, it's as if Cronenberg wants you to lose interest. The protagonist limps from place to place seemingly without any surface-level motivation or sense of destination other than reaching his barber. This is an interesting world-view though, one only Cronenberg can deliver and I know there will be subtle nuances you can only digest on more viewings. I know it will all sink in and rest easily on another watch, as most Cronenberg films tend to do. It's certainly a welcome return from the monotony I trudged through with A Dangerous Method.

Biggest surprise: surrounded by a number of my favorite actors chewing single scenes to pieces, Pattinson really holds his own and delivers what feels like the perfect nucleus holding things together as the world crumbles into strangeness around him... I just don't know what it all means yet, but I know he was captivating, that's for sure.
