Drive 2011 ★★★★★

Rewatched Jul 15, 2012

3rd watch and it simply hypnotizes me. You cannot pinpoint Refn's influences, he's paving fresh 21rst century storytelling. It's a new breed, baby. The kind of film deserved of every inch of praise. I understand and admire the driver more with each viewing.

  • Not just one of the best of 2011, but pretty much the decade too.

  • How the cast and crew clicked so well with such an unorthodox protagonist and execution in style is a minor miracle.

  • Agreed, Colin. It's one of those films where every single aspect was absolutely perfect. Change one thing and you immediately have an inferior film. It's a true masterpiece.

  • It's unreal dude. Such a tight script that still manages enough down time to add much needed nuance to the driver.

  • I love Drive but I think its influences are pretty direct and easy to identify. Jean-Pierre Melville, just to name one. If you like Drive you should check out Le Samourai if you haven't already.

  • I loved Le Samourai when I saw it. That movie is ice cold compared to Drive. The more I watch it, the more heart is in the movie. The driver's actions in the 3rd act are derived from a whirlwind of emotions. But the Melville touch is certainly there.

  • @Sara that's surprising! I had my computer in front of me when I put it on and I just got hooked and put everything down. Watch it again, my views of it have changed a bit each watch.

  • It's certainly one of those films that improves on subsequent viewings.
