Top Gun 1986 ★★★

Rewatched Aug 21, 2012

I hated it as a kid. I thought it was boring and dated. It still is, but there's some badass cheese sprinkled around in there, and the actors prove to all be aware they are working with the same lightweight material. It's tougher with hindsight, but Cruise was brilliant casting for the time. Put that man in aviators any day.

  • What? You hated it? I loved it as a kid. It was the coolest thing ever when it came out.

  • I never saw it when it came out. I first saw it with 15 years of retrospect and was not impressed. As a kid, I was insulted that it was considered popular entertainment, actually.

  • I'm with you ors3. I really did think this was cool when I was a kid. Which in retrospect is mildly embarassing given the huge homoerotic lovefest it turned out to be. But none-the-less it is still a hugely entertaining 80's cheese-fest that you can enjoy with the misses

  • @Mogwai80 I can agree it's entertaining specifically in retrospect of how cheese-filled it is. Double-bill it with Rocky IV and you get some of the best montages to the worst 80s music.

  • I am a sucker for a good montage

  • Oh yeah! Perfect double-bill, Top Gun and Rocky IV. But that's all good 80s music.

Throw in Iron Eagle (1986) there and you have a great 80s movie cheese fest.
