Poltergeist 1982
Poltergeist not only works as a terrifying ghost story but as a time capsule of early 80s sensibilities, and as the fossilized record of the tensions between its producer, Steven Spielberg and its nominal director, the exquisite Tobe Hooper.
The practical effects in this movie are both a strength and a liability, as there is a mix of truly revolutionary "how did they do that?" effects that sometimes fit uneasily into the story. But the most uneasy marriage here is…

Bronson 2008
Refn's biography of the notorious English prisoner takes us repeatedly, and pointlessly, into the ring. Hardy's performance is enjoyably ham-fisted, but the fact that this is a true story can't keep us from wondering if something else interesting might happen. Unfortunately, we get cage match after cage match, well after the spectacle of watching Bronson strip down (and paint up) his body for the beat down has lost its edge.
