Drive 2011

PAGE 38

DRIVER leaves his apartment to the noise of Desire's "Under Your Spell", which has been nonsensically playing at Standard and Irene's party next door to the zombied joy of their guests. DRIVER looks to their door, to see if perhaps the staff at Pitchfork had robbed the place and left their iTunes playlist behind.

IRENE: Hey

We pause for 4 seconds, as IRENE must calibrate her emptiest gaze in an attempt to convey longing, and match DRIVER's own highway speed emptiness disguised as longing.

DRIVER: Hi

We pause for 5 more seconds, IRENE has clearly sensed a staring contest has begun. DRIVER puts on his best Creepface to gain an advantage.

IRENE: Sorry about the noise

5 more seconds pause as DRIVER silently considers the horrors taking place in Sudan. IRENE continues to stare, taking in DRIVER as masturbatory material for her evening's bath.

DRIVER: I was gonna call the cops

4 more full seconds pass as each tries to remember which opening dance sequence went with each season of the Cosby show.

IRENE: I wish you would

Their life-changing exchange is interrupted by STANDARD, who will quiz DRIVER about the relationship with his wife, accepting answers such as "Yes" and "Mmhmm" in place of an ass-kicking.

  • I couldn't disagree more with your review, but yes, it is funny. :)

  • You fucking stupid son of a bitch.

  • "I want more explosions!" "Where are all the zinger's!" "Where is Optimus Prime!"

You're not idiots you just drink too much Mountain Dew and masturbate too much.

  • Thank God someone else thought this. Sums up my view so perfectly I don't have to write my own review now. I feature Drive in my list Trailers Lie.

Oh, and Jamesstuddworth? Someone having a different opinion to yours does not automatically necessarily render them stupid. Given your very basic invective here, I would suspect the opposite.

  • I loved this movie and thought it was great, but this review almost made me spray tea out my nose. It's hilarious. Also hilarious is all of the BUTTHURT happening in this comment thread. You'd think some of these cats MADE this movie instead of WATCHED this movie. Turkeys.

A fine piece of writing, Mr Pierce. My face hurts from laughing. For the cats resorting to calling each other names, here's a form for you to fill out:

  • Its amazing that a review written 8 months ago is still getting responses. That's the mark of well written and by the looks of things divisive piece of critique. Well done Corey, I wish I could have this effect.
I love Drive and said immediatley after seeing it that it was one of the best if not the best film of the year. Many critics agreed with little old me and so I went around feeling smug for a while, but the film divided my friend group between the lovers(Me and my Wife plus a few who shall remain nameless) and haters(one of which has a comment on this thread).
The sparse style and well designed soundscape really drew me into the world of the characters and I felt added a depth that was there if you wanted to find it. Drive is reminiscent of 60's Westerns, particularly Leone's and has a foot in the Japanese samurai movies and the works of Kurasowa. At least stylisticly. These films have an unusual approach to editing and are cinematicly unique with their long and some would say labourious close ups with very little happening. This is a style I love but is really not for everyone.
Loved the review, and appreciated the chance to respond. Keep up the good work.

  • I disagree with your review, but you wrote it beautifully and I love it. I think Drive is essentially a Leoné movie without all Morricone music supporting it. Which says a lot about how effective Morricone's music was.

  • All this stuff is done to create atmosphere, but this was pretty funny. Still love the movie.

  • Since a few people have asked me in person about Only God Forgives now that reviews have poured in:

I saw the OGF trailer and was actually very much looking forward to it. A number of the mixed reviews coming are saying things that I've already thought of about Drive, so my enthusiasm for OGF is yes, much lower than it was a few days ago and I'll be going in with low expectations. Hopefully the reported silence in OGF is just that - silence, rather than the blank staring "....line?" silence that bugs me so much in Drive.
