Corey Pierce’s review:
I just don't get mumblecore, if there's anything to get. We get comedic actors being - at best, mildly humorous, but moreso being kind of kick-dirt-die-alone pathetic, squeezing melodrama out of almost nothing happening. Shove a Badlands ripoff score on top of that and I guess it's poetry or "thoughtful", but for me, we're in Emperors New Clothes territory. I thought Cyrus was OK, mostly thanks to Jonah Hill's performance, but in this case I grew increasingly annoyed at the lack of effort involved. The Duplass Brothers' style, or lack thereof, doesn't even play well on a small screen for me.
At this point, I think I'm done with the Duplass, no matter how high their RT% reaches, no matter which comedic actors they manage to waste the talents of next.
I admire your stance of being done with a filmmaker who just doesn't do it for you.
Amen brother!
