    Mad Max: Fury Road 2015

    ★★★ Watched 15 May, 2015

Fury Road is a decent 2 hour trailer for an amazing 2 minute movie.

Which is a backhanded way of saying I liked it and would watch it again, but am a little befuddled by the hype and the degree of special pleading for so much of what I found missing. I've been struggling to make sense of why I couldn't connect with this for a few days while others think this is revolutionary, and so here comes the speculation…

Second go-round to hopefully join the cool kids table on this one. I guess it's not meant to be.

These 3 stars are probably a lie... as I think i am in denial.

For years I watched the people who shat on Wes Anderon's style and did not understand how they could be so wrong-headed, and here I am, by my giant Wes Anderson book, near by Anderson Criterions (each bought after owning other versions on DVD and VHS and even blu-ray)... so very disappointed.

For the first time ever I was overwhelmed by Wes Anderon's style to the…

Didn't expect to rewatch this so soon given my initial disappointment. Perhaps it was still too soon with recent arguments and discussions still lingering, but at any rate as expected I liked some things more this time, while other flaws just seemed all the more clear.

I made a number of nitpicks last time but at the very core I just don't find this outing as funny as a lot of people do, and I especially don't find the Zero/Gustave…

A rewatch to finally decide my #1 film of the year (the other candidate of which is also jazz drum heavy and carries a theme of the desire for recognition). It's close. So close.

Psychological torture porn for every artist who has ever faced down with a teacher or instructor with a "push" method. Far more entertaining than I would have expected, to the point of ridiculous melodrama (which I'm cool with), Whiplash manages to live up to the hype as a subversive commentary on what makes good art. JK Simmons' extremist musical director is really more of a Full Metal Jacket-ish drill instructor by nature, with hilarious-yet-disturbing one liners that would make In…

Just the kind of pretentious twaddle I like. Couldn't have been happier to watch Michael Keaton lead such a dreamlike visual feast with darkly comedic elements, media satire and meta commentary on some of its main players. I've always enjoyed Inarritu but this is far and away his most interesting, and certailnly most fun, of his outings.

    Interstellar 2014

    ★★½ Watched 11 Nov, 2014

A "when are they gonna get to the fireworks factory" movie if there ever was one, rather tedious and unentertaining for long stretches, relying on an emotional bond to carry the film that is just out of reach. An imperfect dock, if you will.

There are a number of great scenes in the film, but no great performances, not much to want to revisit, and ultimately a lot less to chew on than I would have expected. The final act's…

Thanks to the ability to turn on subtitles to counter the mumbliness and sound mixing of this film, as well as much needed pee breaks for a film this long, I enjoyed this a lot more at home. The father/daughter relationship worked for me much more, and I was able to enjoy the journey, whereas for the first watch it was so obvious that the destination involved the black hole that getting there was feeling tedious and drawn out.

    That…
