  • Django Unchained 2012

    ★★★★★ Rewatched 29 Jan, 2013

Did not feel nearly as long on rewatch.

I object to Letterboxd's hero image of Calvin Candie though. Needs to be the shot of Django's face after he has blown up Candieland.

I feel inclined to give this one 5 stars because I feel like I got more entertainment out of this film than most movies, 5 stars worth of entertainment.

I also feel it's a bit wrong though, because there are a number of things I would like to have seen done differently. I would have recast a few roles. I think Sally Menke's absence is noted. \

But what can I say. Tarantino packs this thing full of colorful characters,…

  • Gravity 2013

    ★★★★½ Rewatched 19 Nov, 2013

My first attempt to watch this was in 3D, and I had acrophobic/3D motion sickness issues which made me run from the theater around 15-20 minutes in to a 2D version, which I thought was merely OK, boring in parts and uninvolving from a character's perspective.

Finally got around to a 2nd 3D attempt, and the extra dimension works on more ways than one. The immersiveness really makes such a huge difference regarding allowing yourself to project into the situations…

I attempted to see this in 3D AVX with Atmos sound last week... and my body rejected it. I immediately had severe motion sickness and the tension creeped up to a level that was too stressful to endure. I walked out. To be honest, it made me frustrated for days about how there's so many intense films coming out and blah blah don't want to go to the movies to be stressed etc etc.

    A week later I'm feeling better…

  • Her 2013

    ★★★★★ Rewatched 17 Jan, 2014 1

The first watch had my brain overclocking as I examined issues of personhood, relationships with technology and how it effects or "real" relationships, and base level social satire, design, sci fi and craft.

This second viewing was more or less letting it wash over me emotionally, and it does the job. While kind and uplifting in a way, this is mostly a sad film that like the best relationship dramas hits a number of buttons. In particular his flashbacks as…

....And that's how Skynet was created.

This will quite likely turn out to be my #1 of 2013 as I still cannot stop glowing and thinking about it. Jonze has created a piece of genre mashup of romance, comedy and sci-fi that kept my mind buzzing with it's many themes and ideas even as I was laughing and fully invested in these characters. Her manages to work as a social satire about our relationship with technology while also using it…

  • The Wolf of Wall Street 2013

    ★★★½ Watched 25 Dec, 2013 4

Damn it Marty, you got outshined by someone aping you this year. And it's because you pulled an Apatow and were too in love with each of your scenes to cut them to a proper length.

Wolf of Wall Street whizzes by for a good while with the kind of excess that would Leo's Gatsby blush, hilarious and vulgar in the most merry of ways. There comes a point though where the lack of humanity or narrative thrust becomes increasingly…

  • The Avengers 2012

    ★★★★ Rewatched 27 Sep, 2012

I say this as a person who is not particularly a fan of Joss Whedon:

Joss Whedon's commentary track on the blu-ray makes this film better. Very impressed, detailed and thoughtful.

  • The Avengers 2012

    ★★★ Watched 04 May, 2012 8

The Avengers is simultaneously a highly entertaining spectacle, and the safest, most calculatedly corporate superhero film to date.

On the plus side, the structure is superb, and it is filled with character highs and individual moments, extended smash-up action, fantasy booking, that gives the viewer exactly what it wants. It is dense with humor that hits the right comic beats, especially when those comic beats are visual, and gives each member their due, even the less exciting heroes like Black…

    PAGE 38

DRIVER leaves his apartment to the noise of Desire's "Under Your Spell", which has been nonsensically playing at Standard and Irene's party next door to the zombied joy of their guests. DRIVER looks to their door, to see if perhaps the staff at Pitchfork had robbed the place and left their iTunes playlist behind.

    IRENE: Hey

We pause for 4 seconds, as IRENE must calibrate her emptiest gaze in an attempt to convey longing, and match DRIVER's own…

  • The Dark Knight Rises 2012

    ★★★★ Rewatched 28 Jul, 2012 2

On rewatch on a regular non-IMAX screen, the experience that made this a 5/5 on first watch is lost and the messiness shines through for me a lot more.

Because I don't want to talk about that so much though, below are a whole bunch of questions, tiny unimportant/tangential/irrelevant mind wandering ones that don't really affect my score. Just things I noticed for asshole snarky shits and giggles. I think I do this a bit as an impression of the…
