Notorious 'Video Nasties' Marathon
An ongoing list - Inspired by the fascinating documentary VIDEO NASTIES: MORAL PANIC, CENSORSHIP & VIDEOTAPE and our coverage of the 'Video Nasties' era on the MOVIE MATTERS podcast (listen to the episode here) I've decided to put the moronic DPP list of notorios & banned 80s ‘video nasties’ to good use: seeking out and watching/re-watching as many of the films on the list as I can find.
I’ll then rank them in my order of preference to crown one as ‘the greatest video nasty… EVER!". Don’t worry I’ll make sure all dogs are out of the room for fear or moral corruption!
A note of clarification from Wikipedia: “Video nasty” was a colloquial term coined in the United Kingdom by 19821 which originally applied to a number of films distributed on video cassette that were criticized for their violent content by the press, commentators such as Mary Whitehouse and various religious organizations…
“The DPP list of ‘video nasties’ was first made public in June 1983. The list was modified monthly as prosecutions failed or were dropped. In total, 72 separate films appeared on the list at one time or another. 39 films were successfully prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act but some of these films have been subsequently cut and then approved for release by the BBFC. The remaining 33 were either not prosecuted or had unsuccessful prosecutions.
A number of films spent a short time on this list because their prosecutions failed shortly after publication or because it was decided that prosecution was not worth pursuing. Ultimately, the list became obsolete when the Video Recordings Act came into force, and since 2001, several of the films have been released uncut. In the majority of cases below where cuts were made, they were scenes of real-life animal cruelty and/or excessive violence to women, both of which are still regarded with some degree of severity by the BBFC."

Shogun Assassin (re-released uncut in 1999)
Xtro (Released uncut in 1987, re-classified 15 in 2007; Xtro was a common title seized during police raids in the North of England prior to the official list being published.)
Breakdown of the list
Of these 72 films:
37 have been released uncut.
23 have been released cut.
1 has been released with additional footage.
11 are banned in the UK because they have not yet been resubmitted for classification by any distributors or been rejected for classification.
Unless noted otherwise, all films that have been released have been rated 18. Also note that a large number of these movies caused additional controversy with the cover art of the original big box releases seen in the video shops of the early 1980s.

Man this is a subject near and dear to my heart. I was 14 when the ban took place and i was SO fucked off that someone could take these movies away from me. It became an obsession for me to track down every one and see for myself why i couldn't see then.
I despise any censorship. Nobody can dictate to me what i can or can't watch, lease of all some middle age bitch called Mary Whitehouse, who didn't even watch them herself.
I apologise for the rant, but it still makes my blood boil.
This is an awesome idea for a list. These days it should be much easier to find the remaining 11 band movies. It's a mammoth undertaking to sit through this lot,but one i'm sure you will find rewarding. Their are some real gems to be found.
Happy viewing.
Wicked list! I'm only a young man now and I probably wasn't even born when the video nasty panic happened. When I was about 13 I started reading books on these titles and slowly became obsessed with it all. That obsession grew and probably the reason i'm into horror/exploitation cinema so much. I've seen a lot of titles on this list but not all. What i've seen, some are good, some are bad but all are interesting!
'The Beast In the Heat' which is still banned outright to this day is a sleazy little affair. I got it cheap on amazon under the title 'SS Hell Camp'. I can't see it getting a release anytime soon.
The Beast In Heat is a belter. That little dude with a huge mole on his butt was a randy little bugger.
Never say never Chris,i never thought they would release The Last House On The Left uncut and the BBFC finally saw sense and did just that. The BBFC of late are a much better outfit than they we're back then. OK,they still ban the odd little movie ( Human Centipede 2 ) and then cut them to buggery before releasing them, but it's very rare these days.
One that i intend to buy next month is The Mardi Gra Massacre. Banned in the UK but thanks to our friends in the US,very easy to get an uncut copy. This is meant to be so bad it's good, and i can't wait to check it out for myself.
The thing with The Beast In The Heat is it's in very poor taste and on a touchy subject. It's not often you see a half man, half creature rip a girls pubic hair off and eat it! I agree the BBFC are a lot better, it's hard to imagine that The Exorcist & Texas Chainsaw were banned until the late 90's.
As For Human Centipede 2, I was very annoyed when I found out they banned it. Not because I wanted to see it but because I thought we took a step back with the BBFC. I watched Human Centipede 2 and they did us a favour, it's shit as hell.
I haven't seen Mardi Gras Massacre but I know it's meant to be very bad. It's something to do with women having their hearts cut out if memory serves me correct! I might look into it myself.
