  • The Master 2012

Even a day later I think this film hasn't fully sunken in. Paul Thomas Anderson specialises in big films, and this is definitely a big film. The pacing is well thought out and the intensity at times feels like it's going through the roof as the lead characters of Freddie and Lancaster repeatedly clash and reconcile as they both struggle with their own and each other's problems.
I really loved the style of this film. Everything from the costume design…

  • The Dark Knight Rises 2012

    ★★★ Watched 29 Jul, 2012

I had really high hopes but this film left me feeling quite disappointed as Nolan went against all the good things he'd created in his first 2 Batman films. There are many too many plot points which are left unexplained and Batman's behaviour throughout is very un-Batman-like. This film falls too easily into the cliche of the blockbusters that Batman Begins distanced itself from and The Dark Knight raised the bar for. Too many of the twists were predictable and…

Much like Wes Anderson's other work, this film is full of style and witty throughout.
The cinematography is noticeably great from the very start, full of well composed shots and smooth tracks and pans. This on top of the heavy 60s stylisation and wonderful colours.
As always with Wes Anderson films, there's a great cast with great performances from big names like Edward Norton, Bruce Willis and Frances McDormand as well as regular Anderson collaborators Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray.…

Funnier than I expected. Reminiscent of the feel of Superbad as an observation on American teen high school culture while also having some great action set pieces too.
Tatum and Hill work well off of each other creating some good laughs throughout. One of the better daft American comedies of the past few years

  • We Bought a Zoo 2011

    ★★★½ Watched 23 Jun, 2012

This is a film i'd been meaning to watch for a while as it's a quirky premise and i tend to have faith in Damon and Johansson.
It's odd in the sense that it's incredibly predictable and some moments are a bit cheesy but overall it's still entertaining and it's not a bad movie.
One note to make is that most of the cheesy moments seem to be at points where an epic song from Jonsi or his band Sigur…

I’d read a lot of interviews with Steve McQueen without ever actually seeing any of his work, but I could always tell from the way he spoke about film, I’d most likely enjoy his stuff.

I’m not sure if enjoy is the write word to use for Shame, maybe enthralled by. It’s one of the most brutally sad films i’ve seen in a while. I’ve seen lot’s of films with sad moments but with Shame you can’t help but feel…

    Extremely loud and incredibly dumb.
This film continues in the same vein as the previous Michael Bay Transformers films: bad plot, poor voice acting, cheesy jokes and designs.
While films like The Avengers have got the balance between action, plot and comedy, this is very disproportionate with far too much emphasis on just being either silly or full of explosions. While watching this I find it hard to believe Michael Bay is not just a child with a short attention span. It's also disheartening to see good actors in this like John Malkovich and Frances McDormand reduced to playing poor characters in a bad script
