For someone retired from filmaking, Soderbergh sure knocks them out. I can't say I didn't enjoy this but there seemed so much missed opportunity. Perhaps I misunderstood what was being said, maybe I was looking too deep? A couple of the lines, especially at the end made want to cry but not in a good way. Acting was solid which was to be expected from a workhorse of a cast. I just guess I needed a bit more pazazz and a little less bejazzle.
Really well directed film about Dennis, a 38 year bodybuilder who lives with his over dependent mother in Denmark. Dennis wants to find love and independence, but he's not really sure how to go about it with unfamiliar social situations so difficult for him. Non actor Kim Kold was a revelation.
Ceylan's eye is just incredible in this story of two men, distant from their birthplaces, each other and their inner selves. He conveys such depth in perfectly framed scenes. Between dialogue, the audio volume seems raised to keep us alert and to draw us further into his magical storytelling.
A really strong performance from Burt Lancaster in this riddle of the sphinx allegorical tale based on a short story by John Cheever. The cinematography presents a dreamlike landscape where Lancaster's hopelessly optimistic character decides to swim home across Westchester County via a series of private and public swimming pools. As he goes, his optimism fades as attitudes towards him change and his story is slowly revealed.
