I love Alexander Payne and this may be his best film. He not only balances the edge of his earlier films with a softer, more gentle approach, but also treads the line between stark naturalism and stylisation, in the way things are shot and the dialogue. Spot on performance by George Clooney, and a fairly perfect script by Payne and Jim Rash. SPOILERS There were a number of scenes that chocked me up, particularly the scene where Clooney's character Matt King had to say goodbye to his wife. This scene is so perfectly played; a potent mixture of acting, writing and framing.
