What About Bob? 1991
Rewatched Feb 26, 2012
David Valkenet’s review:
I just love comedies of this era. What About Bob? is all about the comedic performance, something that is sorely lacking in comedies of today. Not every film needs to feature super subtle minimalist acting, or references to pop culture, or a sarcastic and cynical view on world to be funny.
Sometimes I don't want 'edgy' or 'dark' comedies. I find they wear thin much quicker than films like What About Bob? There is something very insincere about the former brand of humour that I find hard to relate to.
If anyone can recommend some other great comedies of this era please let me know.
Planes Trains and Automobiles comes to mind immediately.
Oh yeah, definitely! Huge fan of Plains Trains and Automobiles.
War of the Roses, Quick Change, The 'Burbs.
A FISH CALLED WANDA
Not familiar with War of the Roses, nor Quick Change, but they have been immediately added to my watchlist. The 'Burbs I have not seen either. Wanda, I love. Thanks!
I saw this movie when I was probably 10 (12 yrs ago) and to this day it is still the ONLY film I have ever literally rolled on the floor laughing out loud. It remains one of my favorite comedies ever. Classic Murray.
I dont know if this is from the era but check out Dirty, Rotten Scoundrels if you havent already. Comedy gold.
Absolutely DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, on the Michael Caine note, you should also try his comedy turn playing Sherlock Holmes (to Ben Kingsley's Dr. Watson) in WITHOUT A CLUE. Very funny stuff which rewards multiple re-watches.
Ah yes, my uncle introduced me to Dirty, Rotten Scoundrels when I was about 10 and I've had plenty of re-watches. Another great example of performance based comedy.
I've added Without a Clue to my ever expanding watchlist!
Added Planes, Trains & Automobiles to my NetFlix...gonna finally watch it soon.
Just watching Uncle Buck, another classic Hughs/Candy film and in keeping with the comedic performance theme.
Have you ever seen Clue? It's the movie of the boardgame starring Tim Curry, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean and a bunch of other great comedy actors. Worth checking out.
Yeah, I've been meaning to watch that. Never seen it before, I'll pop it on my watchlist. Cheers!
The Couch Trip with Dan Aykroyd, Charles Grodin and Walter Matthau is a cool underrated comedy from the late 80s.
