The Avengers 2012
To say there is a lot of hype around this film would be an understatement. I think hype and backlash go hand-in-hand and both are annoying and come from a place of blind devotion or detraction. So, hopefully this review won’t be considered as being part of any backlash to the most popular film of the year (and I’m pretty sure one is coming).
The reason I’m even writing this is because when I signed up to Letterboxed I decided…

The Dark Knight Rises 2012
This review reportedly contains spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Skyfall 2012
Saw this at 12:10am after being awake pretty early for school, so I don't think I got everything that happens, and honestly I may have nodded off a couple of times. Am interested to see it again, and I will later (with a proper review to come), but I don't think my opinion will change: Sam Mendes makes incredibly beautiful boring movies. Give Deakins some award, give the Bond franchise to a different director and I'm excited for the future.

Looper 2012
Saw it a second time with Rian Johnson's in cinema commentary.
Still agree with everything I said in my original review. It was worth rewatching with the commentary, the 2 things I took away from it was that:
1) Johnson intentionally chose to have the film be two halves.
2) The scene in the time machine was done practically! by filming as the lens was removed. I immediately rushed off home to try it with my DSLR and it's true. The effect is awesome and very effective.
I like how much of the film was done practically.Dunno, that's all I got. I'm all Loopered out.

Looper 2012
At the first hour mark of this film I was ready to declare it a masterpiece; it had a reckless energy, insane momentum, great independent/low budget film feel, sense of style, lots of blood and great editing.
The second half didn't quite match the first, perhaps by choice, but either way it felt like it lost a little bit of steam. When we, the audience, get our heads around the goals of these characters the film becomes more about watching…

Argo 2012
The non preachy, non oversimplified, non patriotic, non political scenes won me over in the end but it was neck and neck there for a while. I seem to be alone in enjoying the contrivances which may or may not have been fabricated, such as the runway scene and some other moments of tension. Period setting looks very nice, and although I don't know a lot about politics or this particular area of history, I feel that if I did know more this movie may have been more offensive.

Prometheus 2012
First watch on the small screen and the film really does hold up. Slightly removed from the overwhelming spectacle of my first two watches in the theatre really reveals how well Prometheus does actually work.
I watched this with the commentary of writers Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts which while didn't really add too much information plot-wise that I hadn't picked up from the film itself, they do clear up some of the intentions behind the character motivations. Beyond that…

Moonrise Kingdom 2012
Again, Anderson's meticulous style seems to unintentionally impede any emotional connection with the characters. His references to other films come in the form of directly lifting the thing he likes and feeding it through his Wes Anderson filter which removes the heart but adds symmetry.
Still, it was kind of funny in parts and the actors did well, so I have to give it a pass.
