-
Rocky 1976
David Valkenet
Rocky is easily better than Raging Bull. Easily. -
La Dolce Vita 1961
David Valkenet
La Dolce Vita was over-long, unengaging and featured poorly developed characters I never once cared about. -
17 Again 2009
David Valkenet:
Zac Efron has a great 'old Hollywood' style and sense about him. Great comedic timing and a charisma that is lacking from many young actors today. -
Punch-Drunk Love 2002
David Valkenet
Punch-Drunk Love is Paul Thomas Anderson's best film by a long shot. Perhaps the defining and definitive romantic comedy of my generation. -
The Twilight Saga: New Moon 2009
David Valkenet:
I like Robert Pattinson. I don't think he is given much to do in the Twilight film I saw, but he played his part very well, far exceeding any other actor in the cast (including Michael Sheen). I think he could be a great actor if he's given the chance, he has an interesting face. -
The Adventure 1960
David Valkenet
Antonioni is a fucking bore. -
Jackie Brown 1997
David Valkenet
Jackie Brown is better than Pulp Fiction because it's based a novel that Tarantino did not write. -
The Avengers 2012
David Valkenet:
I fucking hated this movie.tgfilm:
Time for a topical contribution: The Avengers. Competently made but lacking any consistent personality, an undistinguished piece of craftsmanship that threatens to collapse completely whenever an action scene comes up. -
Jackass 3 2010
David Valkenet:
I love the Jackass films. -
Touch of Evil 1958
David Valkenet:
Touch of Evil is better than Citizen Kane. -
The Rules of the Game 1939
David Valkenet:
This may well be (and most probably is) my fault: I do not understand why this is so well regarded. I thought it was a fairly average, if over-long, drama/comedy farce.
I understand that is was meant to be some sort of allegory for the French social system at the time but seeing as I'm not French and don't live during that time it's a little lost on me so all I'm left with is a marginally funny, 2 hour film with too many characters and not enough plot.
Please let me know what's so great about this, I'm willing to reconsider my opinion. -
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2009
David Valkenet:
This is better than any Pixar film - except for The Incredibles (and maybe Ratatoullie [but probably not]). -
Spider-Man 3 2007
David Valkenet:
Seriously, this is not as bad as everyone says. -
Spider-Man 2 2004
David Valkenet
Seriously, this is not as good as everyone says. -
2001: A Space Odyssey 1968
Del Boy:
2001 Space Odyssey is pretty shit. -
Singin' in the Rain 1952
Owen Hughes:
Singin' In The Rain is not charming, it's utterly depressing and the plot is ridiculous. Celebrating a "happy" ending which, logically, shouldn't be. She's now going to sue you and close your business down. Well done. Nevermind. Gotta laugh.... bleurgh. -
The Spy Who Loved Me 1977
SilentJoe13:
Roger Moore is a better James Bond than Sean Connery. -
Lost in Translation 2003
SilentJoe13:
Lost in Translation is painfully overrated. It's terrible. -
Aliens vs Predator: Requiem 2007
SilentJoe13:
Alien vs Predator Requiem is a better Alien Prequel than Prometheus. -
Magnolia 1999
SilentJoe13:
Magnolia is not only PTA's worst film, but a terrible film. -
Gone with the Wind 1939
Jacob Olsen:
Gone With The Wind is a disgusting piece of film-making that lasts for eternities. -
Rain Man 1988
Dirk Hasselman:
Rain man is the most awful piece of autism exploitation ever put to film. -
The Artist 2011
Dirk Hasselman:
The Artist is an incredibly overrated, two-dimensional piece of fluff. -
Forrest Gump 1994
Thomas Ringdal:
Forrest Gump belongs on this list. I want to throw shit at the TV every time it's on. -
As Good as It Gets 1997
John Wheeler:
Performances from all three leads were awful, and TWO of thm won fucking oscars!! -
Grease 1978
John Wheeler:
Just horrible in every aspect. -
The English Patient 1996
John Wheeler:
Boring drivel. -
Shakespeare in Love 1998
John Wheeler:
WTF??? -
Irreversible 2003
fizzybenilyn:
There's a horrible rape and it's all backwards. That's enough for critical acclaim these days?! -
The Dark Knight 2008
Adam McAreavy:
Heath Ledger completely messed the Joker up, he made him look like a tramp who had been dragged through a make up store when in fact the Joker has ALWAYS been pristine with bright green hair, bright red lips, perfect huge white teeth and no fucking scar bullshit. Also, he only got the Oscar because he killed himself before it was released. -
Inception 2010
Adam McAreavy:
Inception was the biggest piece of tripe ever with an overly convoluted plot that just tried too hard to be interesting and just ended up being bullshit, it's as if the script writers thought processes were something like this: "oooh look how twisty this plot it! PLOTCEPTION HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Aren't we cool? We should win Oscars for this stuff? Shouldn't we?! I mean, 'a dream within a dream', that isn't a shitty remix of The Matrix at all is it?!!!" -
The Usual Suspects 1995
MongooseCmr:
The Usual Suspects is the worst movie I have ever seen. There is nothing redeemable about it and I don't see how anyone over the age of 15 could enjoy it. -
Wild at Heart 1990
Thomas Ringdal:
Nic Cage over Johnny Depp any day, or is that not the least bit controversial? -
The Green Mile 1999
Richard Trondsen:
The Green Mile is much better than Darabont/King's other prison-set film, the criminally overrated The Shawshank Redemption. -
The Shawshank Redemption 1994
Richard Trondsen:
The Green Mile is much better than Darabont/King's other prison-set film, the criminally overrated The Shawshank Redemption.Dave Jay:
Just like to add an opinion on THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, which seems to be the 'favourite movie of all-time' for people who really haven't seen that many movies. Which kinda says it all. -
The Man Who Wasn't There 2001
tgfilm:
The Man Who Wasn't There is The Coens' masterpiece, and is among the top five films of the last decade. -
Pulp Fiction 1994
tgfilm:
Pulp Fiction actually IS a great film. -
Winter Light 1963
tgfilm:
Ingmar Bergman almost exclusively makes shit. Winter Light: severe-ass grumpy sexual hang-ups. -
The Seventh Seal 1957
tgfilm:
The Seventh Seal: severe-ass grumpy sexual hang-ups, also unconvincing parable. Persona: severe-ass grumpy sexual hang-ups, but sexy so I kind of like it. Wild Strawberries: good. -
The King of Comedy 1983
tgfilm:
The King of Comedy is Scorsese's best film. -
Antichrist 2009
tgfilm:
Antichrist is a terrible movie. I don't know how anybody liked it, and yet I see slews of positive opinions on it. Come on. Incomprehensible and frankly silly. -
Midnight in Paris 2011
tgfilm:
Midnight in Paris is shit. I really don't see how people see otherwise. Might have some value in a high school English class to make kids check off the people they recognize, otherwise pointless and basically humorless. -
Harold and Maude 1971
tgfilm:
Harold and Maude is really, really bad. Not even for old-people sex--that was a brave move, and commendable--but just because the entire affair was so obvious and pointless and annoying. We get it, life, death, live to the fullest, listen to lots of Cat Stevens; what I don't get is how insistent the movie is that this is something profound and new. -
Bad Taste 1987
Richard Trondsen:
Bad Taste is Peter Jackson's best. -
Blood Simple 1984
Richard Trondsen:
Blood Simple is the Coens' best. -
Batman 1989
Richard Trondsen:
Tim Burton's Batman is still the best superhero film ever made. -
Persona 1967
Thomas Ringdal:
Liv Ulmann is better when she shuts up (Persona) than when se opens her mouth everything else). -
My Night at Maud's 1969
tgfilm:
Eric Rohmer is the best French New Wave director. -
Alive in Joburg 2005
Sam Powell:
I preferred Neill Blomkamp's short Alive in Joburg. more than his feature District 9. I found D9 incredibly disappointing and messy. -
Drive 2011
Adam McAreavy:
Drive is not a masterpiece, it's a mediocre film with a disappointing ending that doesn't deserve the critical acclaim it got. It was a watchable film but nothing more than that.GRAHAM DURDEN:
I really don't understand the accaim for Drive. It's unnecessarily ultra-violent... it wasn't that well acted and/or the script wasn't that great...Well it just reminded me of a Michael Mann knock-off.
-
Groundhog Day 1993
Cinebro:
I don't like Groundhog Day. I really don't. And I love Bill Murray, but Groundhog Day always annoyed me for a variety of reasons. -
Aliens 1986
Carl Ingebretsen:
The worst Alien-sequel of all (excluding the "vs."-ones). Terrible characters, dull story, uncool action and lame, cheesy, dialogue. Cameron destroyed the Alien-franchise, adding the Alien Queen and other uninteresting things that the rest of the franchise had to stick to, instead of sticking to the first film's terrifying"egg->chestburster->alien->egg" (a deleted scene shows the alien, having kidnapped some of the crew, "turning them" into eggs)-sequence. An unimaginable shame. -
The Terminator 1984
Del Boy:
The Terminator is James Cameron's best film. -
True Lies 1994
David Valkenet
The Terminator is James Cameron's best film. -
The Studio Ghibli Collection
Adam McAreavy:
My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away, Ponyo and Princess Mononoke are all terrible excuses for films, the voice acting and animations are all so boring and similar it makes them impossible to watch. I'm not a fan of anime but these are just bad, I wouldn't mind if they were unpopular but as soon as they're mentioned somebody seems to come out of the woodwork and say: "OMG STUDIO GHILBI IS THE BEST EVER!". -
The Shining 1980
Emma Felix:
I might be the only person (besides Stephen King) who thinks this, but I think Kubrick's The Shining is way too overrated! I've given it a second chance, just to see if maybe i missed the appeal. I still don't see it.. I will say that Jack Nicholson was pretty great at depicting insanity, however i do feel he wasn't exactly "right" for the role.. The Shining is not scary (maybe with the exception of the twins), and it strays way too far from the novel on which it is based to even be titled "The Shining". -
Full Metal Jacket 1987
Richard Trondsen:
Full Metal Jacket is Stanley Kubrick's best. -
Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1991
Richard Trondsen:
The Terminator is better than Terminator 2.
bizzare_eye:
James Cameron hasn't made a decent film since T2. -
The People Under the Stairs 1991
bizzare_eye:
Wes Craven is a hack. His best film is easily The People Under the Stairs. -
Saving Private Ryan 1998
bizzare_eye:
Saving Private Ryan, once stripped of its opening, is nothing more than a dull, plodding 'men on a mission' movie rife with the usual trademark Spielberg sentimentality. -
The Departed 2006
bizzare_eye:
The Departed is a terrible remake to the vastly superior Infernal Affairs and should never have won an Oscar. -
Kick-Ass 2010
bizzare_eye:
Cage was the best thing about Kick-Ass, and that isn't saying much. -
Apocalypse Now 1979
bizzare_eye:
Apocalypse Now is perhaps the most overrated film of all time. -
Casino Royale 1967
bizzare_eye:
Casino Royale with Peter Sellers is better than the one with Daniel Craig. -
Videodrome 1983
bizzare_eye:
Videodrome is the best film of the 1980s. -
Hour of the Wolf 1968
VHS:
The most boring movie ever made! -
Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat 2003
VHS:
This is a fun movie that you'll have to suspend reality for in order to enjoy it. -
Schindler's List 1993
The notes for this list item reportedly contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
-
Catch Me If You Can 2002
tgfilm:
Spielberg gets too much hate; Close Encounters of a Third Kind is a near-masterpiece.David Valkenet:
Spielberg is underrated and I don't even like Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan. -
Lady in the Water 2006
Richard Trondsen:
I like M. Night Shyamalanamanalamanam's Lady in the Water... a lot. A very underrated film.Robyn:
I really like Lady in the Water too! Doesn't deserve the reception it gets. -
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy 2004
Sheryl:
Anchorman wasn't funny. I have no idea why so many people are excited about the sequel. Most of the people in it aren't ever funny. -
Napoleon Dynamite 2004
Sheryl:
I still don't know what was "funny" about Napolean Dynamite. Took 3 attempts to finish the movie because I fell asleep each time. -
No Country for Old Men 2007
Sheryl:
No Country for Old Men was a snooze-fest. Everyone said it was amazing so I stayed awake entire time waiting to be amazed. Amazement never came. Maybe I just have bad taste. -
Superman III 1983
Robyn:
Superman III is a much better film than Superman II. 3 has Clark Kent fighting Superman and that crazy scene where the lady turns into a robot which still gives me nightmares! 2 had amazing villains but the whole side story of Superman turning into a human is a bit poo.Pryor gets a lot of flack for Superman III but I always think he's funny in it! I also like how funyn the film is, its why I enjoy Superman the most out of all the superhero films, I especially liek the opening sequence with the blind man and the man in the toy penguin on fire! Superman turning bad and smashing all those drink bottles with peanuts, Clark eating dog food, Pryor trying to hack into those computers with that drunk guy, ahhh! Best film ever. I actually got sacked from my job when I was fifteen because I stayed home to watch it on telly before the boxset came out, oops!
-
Memento 2000
Robyn:
Memento is the biggest load of wank ever put out into cinema.I just think Memento is really boring and for all its confusion and paying attention all the way through I feel there wasn't a big pay off at the end and it was still too ambiguous. I'm not really a Nolan fan to begin with but that film really irritates me!
-
Bachelor Party 1984
moleskie:
Bachelor Party is Tom Hanks best work. -
Shaun of the Dead 2004
bizzare_eye:
Shaun of the Dead is abysmal and very unfunny. I SHOULD like it as, 1) I love zombie films and 2) I love other zombie comedies like Braindead, and Return of the Living Dead. I have watched this film three times now, almost as if trying to 'make' myself like it, but simply find it terrible. After watching Hot Fuzz, I've come to the conclusion that it's mainly because of Pegg and Frost. I can't stand either of them. -
A History of Violence 2005
bizzare_eye:
As for A History of Violence, I'm a huge fan of Cronenberg's 70s and 80s output, so to see him produce something so straight-laced and dull was a huge disappointment for me. By no means a bad film, but just something I didn't enjoy. Ditto Eastern Promises. -
Demolition Man 1993
bizzare_eye:
I also don't like Rocky. Sport films aside, Stallone is another one of those 'actors' I just can't take to. It's not so much the film itself; it's just him. The only Stallone film I've enjoyed (and still do enjoy) is Demolition Man. -
Manhattan 1979
bizzare_eye:
As for Woody Allen, I quite like his earlier more 'slapstick' style films, but post 'The Front' he seemed to set up residence in his own ass, to the extent that I find his films to be annoying, and far from insightful, charming, and witty as the neurotic caricature he has become believes them to be. -
Zodiac 2007
tgfilm:
And I'm guessing the music video comment is directed at David Fincher? I'll echo the 'overrated' clamor on David Fincher. I used to like Se7en and The Game, but I recently re-watched the Game and am left with only Se7en (and Fight Club, but I watched that when I was in a depressed teenage state and don't trust my love for it anymore). For the list, I'll just say that Zodiac is shit. -
Burn After Reading 2008
tgfilm:
More unpopular opinions: Burn After Reading is sorely underrated, and is much funnier than The Big Lebowski. (I still like The Big Lebowski a fair amount, though.) -
Aguirre: The Wrath of God 1977
tgfilm:
Aguirre, Wrath of God is a tedious if affecting film whose existence is rendered pointless by Fitzcarraldo, which explores the same themes except with an engaging (even charismatic) main character, plus amazing mise-en-scene. -
A Clockwork Orange 1971
tgfilm:
Not an controversial opinion, but a side note: I liked A Clockwork Orange, but am terrified of its popularity. I can't help but shudder whenever I see someone with Alex as their avatar--do people identify with that kid? CMON. -
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls 1995
JeanVegas:
The real Jim Carrey died in 1995. His last true film was Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. -
Hulk 2003
Brian Gyss:
Ang Lee's Hulk isn't a bad movie - the biggest problem is has is that Nick Nolte thinks he's in a different movie. -
Running Scared 2006
Brian Gyss:
Also, the 2006 film Running Scared starring Paul Walker and that one lady from Lost - pretty good as well. -
Cars 2006
David Valkenet:
Also, I think I might add my own entry: Pixar are very overrated. 1 bona fide masterpiece (The Incredibles) and a handful of great films, but there are as many not-so-good to outright bad films as there are good. (Maybe a little hyperbolic, but seriously, these guys have nothing on Disney's best films. -
Halloween II 2009
JohnQuinn:
Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN II: If David Lynch made a slasher film, this would be it. Yes - there is a LOT more going on in this movie than people are giving it credit for. -
The Social Network 2010
JohnQuinn:
THE SOCIAL NETWORK: It is not inspiring at all. I don't know how the movie won Best Score or Best Editing. -
Dawn of the Dead 1979
bizarre_eye:
Another one: Romero's Dawn of the Dead is far from the best zombie film ever made, let alone the best horror film ever made. -
Reservoir Dogs 1992
MurrayW:
I found it extremely hard to continue watching reservoir dogs as I found it so boring, I can't understand how it is so widely loved? -
Braveheart 1995
MurrayW:
Same with Braveheart, but then again maybe its just because i'm Scottish and 99% of the film is utter bull! -
Straw Dogs 1971
JK Wall:
Straw Dogs (the original) was a terrible movie. It was poorly paced and the dialogue was too sparse, and that isn't even getting to how incredibly misogynistic the whole thing was. -
Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever 2009
JK Wall:
I didn't think Cabin Fever 2 was an awful movie. Before it was released the (very talented) director came out saying he wanted his name off it. I think if you ignore the fact that a very talented man got screwed over by executives (what else is new?) it is one of the better straight-to-dvd horror movies in a long time.
I'm with you on Braveheart, but I did enjoy Reservoir Dogs. I think the style carried me through much of the film (as usual with Tarantino) but I can definitely see where you're coming from.
A lot of these controversial opinions don't seem very controversial. Haha. Not liking Twilight? Really? I'll try, but I might end up being non-controversial as well.

Last but not least, I think 10 Things I Hate About You was a legitimately good movie.
No no, check out list view. Twilight is there because I really like Robert Pattinson and think he's a genuinely good actor. Seeing as I am a 21 year old male and not a teen girl, it's a little controversial.
I think these may already be on the list, but in my opinion Superman I & II (which I am convinced are actually one film split in half for retards), are possibly the worst films ever made. Every 5 years or so I manage to convince myself that I'm wrong and that I should give them another go, and after I do, I feel like stapling my genitalia to a board like Bob Flannigan as punishment for doubting myself AND to help me forget the shit I just wasted part of life watching.
Dear God man, why? I love Superman The Movie. The second is ok and the third is awesome (the fourth sucks).
I totally agree that Michelangelo Antonioni is a complete BORE!
I don't know if it's on the list, I didn't go through it entirely but I think that Tim Burton's Batman films are the superior Batman films. Let the death threats commence.
I also think Keaton is the superior Batman/Wayne...By FAR.
Even the suit looks better, I even prefer the gadgets and the batcave and Alfred (Can't remember the actors name). I also think Burton's Batman stands up still. I think the latest trilogy is over-rated, though I enjoyed them, they are no 'masterpieces' as I hear people throwing around nonchalantly.
Oh, and I too think Cliffhanger is AWESOME. I saw it at the cinema 3 times and it made me want to climb EVERYTHING.
Why do I always find such awesome lists so late?! Anyway I don't see Clerks on here, so here goes. I hate Clerks more than any movie I've ever seen. The terrible acting, editing, direction, and writing don't make the movie charming. They make it an incompetent piece of shit that gives amateur filmmaking a bad name.
Good choice, I've added it. I quite like the film and find it charming in an Ed Wood (though not as bad), independent film, hang out type way. But the dialogue isn't great and the acting and direction is subpar.
