Flawed Masterpieces
What are the most flawed films you've given 4.5 or 5 stars and consider a masterpiece?
These should be the films you love because of the flaws, not despite of them.

I also love the movie the way you do but from what my friends are saying, the first act was a bit too crazy. I personally loved the way the tapes were erased.
ThatSpyIsASpy - I'll definitely add it. I love how uncynical it is, especially in a time when cynicism is the norm.
VHS - Hmmm, that's an interesting choice. I'll add it.
I gotta agree with Adam that "Synecdoche..." is a hypnotic masterpiece. The only flaw might be the pacing in parts. All I know is by the time the ending came I was so cocooned in its' web that tears were being milked from me by the suffocating silken fiber of it all. Truly a moving experience. I also agree with
A.I. (truly sad, except for the carny-like section)
Margaret (I know this one is either ya love it or hate it-BUT I stand by my love of it's performances.
Inland Empire: I had my doubts at first about this one on watching the first half. But by the end Laura Dern and Lynch delivered the chills!
I think the important thing to keep in mind about this list that these films are masterpieces because of their flaws. Fixing or removing the problematic elements would greatly diminish the film's power, scope, ambition etc etc.
As for Margaret, I added it to the list after my first watch, but seeing it again I am hard pressed to actually find any flaws. I'm seeing it for a third time soon and the more I think about it the more perfect it is.
Inland Empire I do not like, that was added by Adam, but I'll definitely agree that Laura Dern was phenomenal.
Love seeing Margaret in here. I actually have Suspiria, Eyes Wide Shut, Bringing out the Dead, Apocalypse Now, and Inland Empire in my Top 100 favorite films list. Bringing out the Dead in particular hasn't got it's dues. It's easily one of the more underrated films of the 90's.
Three other films from the 80's that people always tell me I'm crazy for loving are Nightmare on Elm st. 3, Pet Sematary, and Masters of the Universe. Three amazing genre films!! You might now be one of those people who think I'm crazy but I truly love all three of these.
Grooveman, I have now seen Margaret (theatrical cut) twice and loved it more on the second time to the point where I can't really pick out many flaws. I wrote a review after both viewings and you can see how my problems after the first watch were resolved on the rewatch. I am seeing it again before it leaves theatres. I absolutely love it.
I think those films you mentioned don't really qualify for this list seeing as the common flaw most of these films share is ambition and trying to do too much. Don't get me wrong though, I love those films, especially Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3. It's easily the best of the series and in my top 100.
Great answer David and great top 100.
I can vouch for you on two of those Grooveman: NOES 3, and Pet Sematary. Both are genre gems. I haven't seen MOTU though, always seemed so cheeseball at a distance. Maybe i should though. If it's at all findable now?
MOTU is awesome but that's coming more from my 6 year old self rather than my 28 year old self haha!
