The Litmus Test

Let me know what film you use, above all, as a litmus test for potential friends and partners.

Is there one film you love that could ruin a potential relationship with a person who hates it?

What would be the film that if a Letterboxd user wrote a negative review for, you would unfollow them?

Tell me why you chose that film, and any stories that may be associated with it, and I'll add the film and your answer to the list, which you will be able to see in list view.

I'll start with Singin' in the Rain:

  • Master and Commander is amazing. Haven't seen it since the theater, but it was something I had no interest in and walked out blown away.

I'm a big Midnight Run fan, too.

  • This might be my favorite discussion... possibly ever. You bunch of "imagineers". haha

  • Probably "No Country for Old Men," because
    A) It's a masterpiece, and it shows someone's ability to recognize a great work and
    B) From a genre standpoint, it includes everything I love and shows if I would share common interests with someone.

  • Cannot agree more with Master and Commander, Midnight Run and No Country for Old Men. All films worthy to be on the list.

  • The other day I had a co-worker tell me they didn't like Blazing Saddles and I replied "now we can't be friends". And then I find this list. Perfect timing. I'm sure I could think of a number of suggestions but I'm sticking with Blazing Saddles.

  • Good choice, anyone who can't appreciate a horse being punched out cold doesn't deserve friendship.

  • The Castle (1997). I'm ok if someone doesn't like it. But if someone loves it they go up 10 notches in my books and I will forever trust they sense of funny.

  • Good choice. Here in Australia it's practically law that you have to like The Castle, but I don't know how it's perceived overseas. It's on the list.

  • It's probably late for me to add this, but I have to go with Raiders of the Lost Ark. I know people who haven't seen this film and I just shake my head at them. I just stop talking and look at them in shame.

  • It's never too late, sir! Great choice too. I think with Indiana Jones I fail a few Litmus Tests because I actually like Temple of Doom best.
