Sex Drive could have been so much more.
Its not that there is really a great story that was wasted here.
But as far as a raunchy sex comedy aimed at high-schoolers/college, it could have been a whole lot better.
It is never expected for any high school/college comedy to really be something special, especially when they are sex comedies.
But some work. American Pie and its sequals are all good (the first being the best).
Yet, the usually need to have either extremely non stop funny jokes (Superbad),or really likeable characters and interesting story (American Pie).
Sex Drive's main character is an 18 year old senior who is a virgin.
Not that this is a problem. But the problem is Ian Lafferty (the main character) is a complete loser.
There is a different between being very shy, unexperienced with girls and being completely annoying.
He makes every possible wrong decision, and is afraid of doing anything wrong.
I can get not wanting to pass the law or hurt someone, but completely rejecting almost everything.
Thank god he has a cool, ladies man Lance Nesbitt for a best friend.
So the story starts when after being hopeless in his surrounding, he starts chatting with a hot girl online.
He makes a whole new character for himself, trying to come off as cool and strong (as oppose to his real identity).
After the girl offers herself to him, he decides to go on a drive all the way to Knoxville, Tennessee from Chicago.
Joining him are his best friend Lance, his childhood friend Felicia Alpine in a 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge borrowed without permission from his older brother.
So stuff happen along the way (obviously stuff have to happen, as they can't just make it to their destination without something going bad along the way), until they reach their destination.
And for the most part, the film is fine. Its not perticularly great, and is rather sparse on the jokes. But some are really funny, and some are amusing.
And the trio does have a nice chemistry between them.
Sadly, the ending completely messes this up.
Not enough that the relationship between the three is a little predictable.
The ending is really pushing it in terms of the relationship between them.
But what is worst, is the ending turns into a gunfight/ car stealing scenario.
This feels completely out of place and tune with the rest of the film, and sadly derails it quite a lot.
My review may sound as I completely did not enjoy this film.
I did enjoy it, as far as you can enjoy an average sex comedy.
It is funny at parts. And more if you are in the more correct age to watch this (13-20 something).
But sadly, the ending really killed the film.
I heard the unreated version is a lot better though. Will have to check that out.
