Raiders of the Lost Ark 1981 ★★★★★

Rewatched Sep 09, 2012

I was talking with someone recently about whether this movie would qualify for a "Must see to be Film Literate" list. I initially thought it could be skipped since it's just a "genre picture". But after seeing it again on the big screen, I have to change my tune. If there's a better action/adventure movie out there, I can't imagine what it would be. Raiders is perfect. It's quickly paced, has the number one leading man of my generation, a sassy heroine, and creepy villains. The sets and location scenes are beautiful, and there's not a detail left to chance.

This time, I noticed something new. I feel like the movie's script is broken up into 12-15 minute segments, just like the classic serials that were Spielberg's inspiration. Each one ends loosely with a cliffhanger or clear transition before changing to a new location to continue the story. I have never seen it more clearly. I need to get the DVD and see it again with a pen and a watch to note when the "parts" transition.
