Adapted from and Inspired by the Bard
Watching the first few minutes of Olivier's Henry V last night got me to thinking about all the movies that come from Shakespeare.
Often we get straight adaptations of the play to the screen, such as the many versions of Hamlet. We also have stories based on Shakespeare but set in a different milieu, like Kiss Me Kate.
Let's list them here!
Note: I probably won't list EVERY version of the plays themselves -- I should think a few representative ones would suffice. I am more interested in films based on the Bard's work or directly inspired by it. They could also be stories that include performances of Shakespeare, such as Dead Poets Society.
Don't forget Sons Of Anarchy.
Absolutely I would include it. But there's no option for it. One of these days, I will go enter some TV shows into TMDB. But not today.
i feel a special kinship with shakespeare because we have the same birthday. he also died on his birthday, so i'm hoping i'll do the same, lol. is that morbid?
anyway, i'd like to add coriolanus. i'll have to do some digging to find some other ones.
You're missing his best play, Macbeth. I'd suggest putting up both Wells' and Polanski's version.
@Dirk -- Yes, thanks. I was listing the tragedies in my head when making it, and I felt I was missing one. . .
Isn't there an adaptation, too? Scotland, PA -- maybe?
Scotland, PA is awesome! I'm also really fond of Ran, 10 Things I Hate About You, and O.
Whoops - missed 10 Things and O the first time I scanned your list. How about Ran, though? That's pretty amazing I think.
@Jason -- well-remembered! I can't believe I forgot RAN.
