A film so uniquely in my wheelhouse that I hesitate to recommend it to anybody else. To wit: Paolo Sorrentino is one of my favorite directors working (CONSEQUENCES OF LOVE is definitely top 100 films of all time, maybe higher). Not only is it named after and repeatedly feature an amazing Talking Heads song, it also features my favorite Will Oldham song of the last ten years. A decent chunk is filmed in Bad Axe, Michigan, close to where I grew up. I've often thought it would be awesome to follow around Robert Smith whilst he did day to day household errands. Etc. All of which to say is that I don't want to spend any time convincing anyone else they'll like this shaggy dog tale (although it does seem to have attracted its share of admirers at NZFF), but hopefully people can at least admire Sorrentino's boldly expressionistic direction. Heading towards 4 1/2 stars until the ending comes in and makes the whole sprawling enterprise seem wildly reductive. Still, a strange, wonderful, and funny film.
