A man keeps a young boy locked in his basement. That sounds like a horror film, but it is not. It has a naturalistic atmosphere and great character development, the man is someone that could be your neighbour. My first impression was Haneke (the director) meets Misery (the film). The ending is superb. Recommend if you like slow films with a disturbing undertone.

Gina Lollobrigida, eggs, chickens, avant garde music by Bruno Maderna, giallo, bizarreness and more in a blender. Result: Death laid an egg! I don't know what to think of it. But I will watch it again later.

No violins. Absolute zero. The truth laid bare. This film scares me more than most horror films. This is.

  • Smiles of a Summer Night 1955

I enjoyed this early Bergman. It has some pretty clever and funny dialogues ("Speaking of which, will there be a war?". "Why should there be a war?", "I wonder that too..." )and beautiful women (a Bergman trademark). The first half of the film is so-so, but the last half is good. We have a quite bizarre dining scene (reminds me of The hour of the wolf), a Russian roulette, and more. Eventually all of this would lead to masterpieces like The 7th seal, Persona, The Silence, The hour of the wolf, Wild strawberries and much more.
