Film #13 of 'It's June Jim, but not as we know it.'
This is not a good film. It messes up just about everything in the pacing and in the forced narrative structure. It is completely fractured and doesn't really engage its audience, creating distance because of a cold and clinical approach to the subject matter.
And yet, somehow, for me it clicked.
I guess this is because of Herzog's knack for hypnotism. Even when his pacing is completely off (which really is the case here), he still manages to create an atmosphere that is intriguing. This almost watches as a composition of slides, forcefully mashed together to give them meaning. The overall picture wasn't that great, but those slides were amazing sometimes. It has a weird rhythm to it that sometimes sucked me in completely and sometimes took me completely out of it.
Herzog's exploration of the murder committed in this film is greatly helped by the excellent Shannon. His craziness here is slightly subdued, but there is always a lingering malignity behind his eyes that is very effective. It isn't a powerhouse performance but it is subtle and convincing.
I cannot recommend this film, unless you're up for trying to find out if it clicks for you as well. In that case, by all means, give it a go.
