DirkH’s review published on Letterboxd:
Wreck it Ralph shows once again that having a great idea and an imaginative setting means absolutely nothing if you insist on having your story go through the motions like a production line worker. Respect for creative storytelling is traded in for pretty pixels, an appealing aesthetic and the obligatory conclusion in the final act. All this turned Wreck-it Ralph into a piece of IKEA furniture.
Granted, the film's first act showed promise, but once Ralph's objectives become clear, there was no doubt anymore that yet again an animated film would flesh out its themes in the exact same ways so many other films have done already, often much better. More often than not films of this irk have great humour as its saving grace, but I found this one to be surprisingly unfunny. The only times I laughed were at the in-jokes the gamer in me really appreciated. And for that tickle of nostalgia I give it its two stars.
I really hope that kids love this, but I thought it was annoyingly mediocre.
