Preface: I read this book and HATED it.
The movie while being like the book, as it was written and directed by the author, had a little more heart. But this speaks to the casting more than anything. Lerman and Watson brought humanity to their shallow characters. Miller, mean while, made me adore the one character I liked from the book. Patrick was the one character in the book that had heart. Miller gave him life.

I went into this film nearly spoiler and review free. I only watched two of the viral videos (the TED talk and the David intro) and I knew not to view it as an Alien prequel. Those may be the pre-reqs to enjoy this film.
