Freeman Williams’s review:
Stanley Kubrick's movie version of Stephen Kking's novel was first derided when it came out for not following the novel. It is now considered a classic, for not following the novel.
Kubrick's eschews the full-blown fantastic elements of the novel for a more psychological horror tale; though the haunted elements of the Overlook Hotel are definitely in attendance, their presence is teased out over the length of the movie, never truly explained, and all the more horrific for it.
