The Coen Brothers - Ranked

My favourite directing duo...the Coen Brothers. Dark, funny, absurd...some of their movies are some of the best in cinematic history, others maybe not so much.

Either way, here's a list of their works that I've got round to seeing in order of personal preference.

Please tell me your order of these films; I'd love to know. :)

  • here's my top 10: letterboxd.com/cdesanty/list/top-10-coen-bros/

You need to see their debut film: Blood Simple

  • Yeah, I own all of them, and I bought the box set for Blood Simple, but ended up watching Fargo. Which I love. :)

  • Intolerable Cruelty should be in any Coen list.

  • It's also one I haven't seen. I have to see Blood Simple, Barton Fink, the Hudsucker Proxy, The Man Who Wasn't There, Intolerable Cruelty...oh yeah, I forgot that the Ladykillers was a Coen movie. I'll add that.

  • I do it like this: Big Lebowski, then I put all the rest in a big pile, jumble them up and call that the order.

They're all good in different ways and the only one that is head and shoulders above the others is El Duderino (if you're not into the whole brevity thing).

    Where is Hudcucker Proxy?

  • @danielm Never seen it. :/ My Coen watchlist is Blood Simple, Hudsucker Proxy, Barton Fink, Intolerable Cruelty, The Man Who Wasn't There and Inside Llewelyn Davis. But that's on everyone's watchlist, RIGHT? *quickly adds to his own*

  • OH. MY. GOD.

nah, just kidding, to each their own..
Also, when you said it was your least favourite, I thought you meant in general, and not just by the coens :-)

  • @MsTwomey No, it's a sold three and a half star film, just my least favourite Coen film. Intolerable Cruelty would probably take that spot if I actually watched it.

  • @danielm, I just have to salute your brilliant logic! It's perfect. His Dudeness on the first place, and the rest together in a pile of almost-perfectness;)

  • @Drive, Hey! Intolerable Cruelty isn't that bad, really. It's quite entertaining. But it's nowhere near the genius that is The Big Lebowski, or O Brother. I'd probably place The Hudsucker Proxy last, but I still enjoyed it.

  • @MsTwomey At a certain point, you just can't bother trying to rate between them.

  • @danielm, No it seems quite impossible really. But all the same, I'll probably do rank them when I've watched them all. Shamefully still missing a few..

  • @MsTwomey and there's certainly nothing wrong with doing so. I've just given up trying to keep it up to date. I'd probably organize it differently each day.

  • @danielm, yeah, there's just too much good work to keep track of what's best.
