My style of crime film, but I'm on the fence about it. Granted, the subtitles on Amazon Prime were inconsistent, so I missed a good chunk of Milo's dialogue. Undecided if I'll watch the rest of the trilogy or not.
As a child of the 80's, I loved the opening of this film. The stylized lighting and framing with the stark contrast of so much black and white drew me in. Bowie, for the limited time he was on screen, was superb with the amounts of makeup he had to wear, and Catherine Deneuve was a true timeless beauty.
The novel take on the vampire story was pleasant, but the gorehound in me would have liked to seen a bit more of the feeding scenes. Granted, if I have to exchange bloody feasts for more Susan Sarandon on Deneuve action, I can live with that, too.
But the letdown for me was the giallo-style ending. The sudden tilting of the room and the undead lovers rising just took me out of the movie. That abrupt shift in styles felt off to me.
So, if anything, watch it for the acting and the cinematography.
