Emily Achler’s review:
Apparently the origin of Seinfeld, Swingers, Tarantino, Apatow, and Hornby-- this movie invented the "guys sitting around talking about shit" genre. It's interesting to watch the scenes that have so clearly been incorporated into the modern masters (arguing about the B sides on records--High Fidelity. arguing about a leftover roast beef sandwich-- Seinfeld).
As it's supposed to be 1959, not only are all the guys basically assholes, but they also aren't socialized to be friends with women-- and therefore treat the alien species w/ contempt & lies. The difference w/ Diner dudes in the modern millennium is a degree of self-awareness. They know they're being assholes, and they feel bad about it. I guess it's progress.
