  • The Flowers of War 2011

    ★★★ Watched 31 Jul, 2012

Opening with an explosive 15 minutes - filled with death, bloodshed and terror - Zhang does a fantastic job at setting the scene and the environment of where this story plays out. • Network 1976

    ★★★★★ Watched 09 Jul, 2012 1

Network, welcome to my All Time Top 10 Best Movies Ever list. Even after one viewing you can tell the quality of every aspect of this film.

Wickedly funny and outrageously dark it's 36 years old and still relevant, which in hindsight is insane.

    Perfect filmmaking. End of story.

Superb, this is DePalma in his absolute prime. Interesting, shocking and never once loses your attention. Fantastic obsession with the importance of sound leads to some really interestingly played out scenes with a great central performance by Travolta but Nancy Allen is even better. Cannot recommend enough.

    ★★★½ Watched 02 Feb, 2012 4

The are so many fantastic ideas in The Chronicles of Riddick that as a sci-fi fan I feel a bit spoiled, simply put there's enough included that it really should be two films. I respect the filmmaker's prerogative to try and give this it's epic feel but it'could be a tad too epic for it's own good.

Saying that though, I thoroughly enjoyed Riddick, other than the sprawling story and beautiful aesthetic you have a central character that is both bad ass and mysterious. Lovely sc-fi madness at it's best.
