Emma Lane’s review:
I have a feeling that seeing the stage show would be so much fun, but somehow that was lost in translation. Not to say that Rock of Ages isn't fun, it just isn't 'so much fun'.
If you can manage to not singalong to the songs then you are a stronger person than I, but the songs do make up the largest percentage to fun-to-be-had here.
Tom Cruise is on fire as Stacee Jaxx, I was blown away. I am not Mr Cruise's biggest fan, but when he's good, he's very good. I still can't quite believe how good the performance he gave was. Unfortunately the other actors, though undeniably talented, seemed to just be cruising along (pun completely intended, I'm sorry) and not putting in any real work. Oddly Russell Brand put in my second favourite performance to be had, even with his spotty Brummie accent.
What it really comes down to though isn't how critically good this film is, but how much fun the average audience member is going to have, and I think given the right audience it'd be aces.
Unfortunately the film falls flat on most of the lighter moments, and the average audience member is too busy being offended by sub-plot homosexuality that you are more likely to be left wanting than full satisfied.
Probably best just to put the money a ticket would cost towards seeing the stage show.
