Monsters 2010 ★★★★½

Watched Jul 22, 2012

A Monster film from the ground up, looking at an alien invasion from the perspective of two people makes a nice change from the usual big alien invasion/disaster movies. The main characters were well developed making for a genuinely anxious watch. The monsters are cleverly kept mostly out of sight (I think it was made on quite a small budget). I really enjoyed it, it managed to touch on ideas of environment ecology, military control and a poor/rich divide without overdoing any of the points or at the expense of character or plot. Well worth a watch.

  • It was made for $500,000, and most of the effects shots were done on a home computer. Which is just mad to think about really in this day and age.

  • Wow, even more kudos to them! It feels like a large scale film viewed through a much smaller lens, which is I guess is the point.

  • It was mainly made by one man. Gareth Edwards. He only has one other movie to his name before this, and now he is doing the new Godzilla film.

Monsters is fantastic. I really enjoyed it.

  • the two leads were great with beautiful realistic performances,
    the ending was heartbreaking

  • I was surprised to enjoy this film as much. It was neat to read the trivia that said "the shooting locations were used "without" permission, and the extras were just people who happened to "be there at the time"' :-)

  • @mick I was really rooting for them, in my head they are reunited and live happily after ever... *sob*

@ShowBill it definitely made it feel very authentic, according to IMDB there wasn't much of a script either, which makes it even more impressive!
