Knowing 2009 ★★

Watched Aug 22, 2012

I love Nicolas Cage. I will watch (almost) anything he does. Every now and then he does something I have no interest in (such as Trespass) but nine times out of ten, whether the movie looks good or bad, a movie of his is going to worth seeing. He's the most exciting actor, completely wild, either hilarious or exhilarating or both. He has a reputation for being a bad actor. I disagree. I think he's one of the best actors working together. Like Vincent Price before him Nicolas Cage is a great actor who just loves to do bad movies.

For this reason I watched Knowing. In one sense I was disappointed at first: Nicolas Cage is relatively subdued. I was greatly surprised in another sense though. The movie seemed good. Indeed the first hour of this is movie is good in my opinion. Not great but it has a nice classic horror vibe and it had be genuinely engaged.

Luckily I don't have to be that guy who likes Knowing because the whole thing falls apart in the end, despite the very promising beginning. The ending is ludicrous and completely sucks the life out of the film that preceded it. Also the eventual female sidekick has absolutely no character and is completely bland.

Still while this movie is not good it's also hardly bad, in my opinion. There were some nice directorial flourishes, especially the impressive long take in the middle of the film during the plane crash. I do think Alex Proyas is capable of good things although neither this nor the better but similarly flawed Dark City has fulfilled that promise.
