The Dark Knight Rises 2012
I warmed to this in IMAX. My qualms about the storytelling were lessened somewhat, and my appreciation for the technical filmmaking grew. I still have massive issues about the borderline-offensive thematic material in there though.

The Dark Knight Rises 2012
It's not a masterpiece - it's over-busy and a lot of the ideas and emotional beats are either muddled or rushed over - but it's Bruce Wayne's story, and that story concludes in spectacular, satisfying fashion.

Silver Linings Playbook 2012
An amiable film with an egregious ending that essentially destroyed all goodwill I had towards it.
-
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 2012
Peter Jackson is become George Lucas, destroyer of storytelling.

Prometheus 2012
A bad movie made really well.
Has some interesting ideas and flashes of brilliance, not to mention astounding production design and technical work, but none of those ideas are explored to any satisfying degree, and often they're treated in the most moronic way possible (usually by having a big monster smash things). And then there's the characters, who operate seemingly randomly and for no reason other than to create horror setpieces.
The script is awful beyond belief, but the movie just scrapes by on the strength of virtually everything else.

Moonrise Kingdom 2012
Wes Anderson's best film since RUSHMORE, probably. A wistful but honest relationship sits at its core, and that's what hooked me in. All the typical Anderson stylings are present and accounted for but this is the first time in years his characters have managed to bust through all that.

The Hunger Games 2012
Half an hour too long and half a migraine too shaky, which is unfortunate as there's some good stuff in there. Some of its (good) story, theme and world-building is a bit muddied in parts. Keen to do a fan-edit tbh.

Iron Man 3 2013
A return to form and probably the best "comic-book-style" superhero movie since SPIDER-MAN 2.
MILES better than THE AVENGERS.
-
The Amazing Spider-Man 2012
A relentless grind of a story, nonsensically chopped to pieces in what appears to have been a last-minute recut, and so tonally all over the place and without suspense, wonder or excitement that it ends up being the dullest blockbuster of the season.
Andrew Garfield's a good casting choice. But that's about all I can say on the plus side.

The Shining 1980
Still got it. When you let it take hold it is powerfully creepy.
