If Hammer had been based in Czechoslovakia rather than England, we'd have seen a lot more films like this - a roiling period psychological melodrama with everything turned up to eleven. While it lacks the substance of Herz's Cremator, it still has more than its fair share of heightened emotion and sumptuous imagery.
