While the City Sleeps 1956 ★★★½

Twenty years on from M, it feels like Lang’s coasting a bit with this crime thriller with more than a hint of screwball comedy about it. I’m a sucker for ’50s newsroom business though, so I was more than happy with the soapy backbiting and melodrama.

It was interesting to see how much of a massive dick Andrews’ newsman was. For a hero, he’s pretty cavalier about endangering his fiancée, smooching other ladies and just generally carousing and having a good time. His notions of trackside safety leave a lot to be desired too.
