    The Revenant 2015

    ★★★½ Watched 04 Jan, 2016

They say that revenge is a dish best served cold or in Alejandro G. Inarritu’s latest film, The Revenant‘s case, completely frozen and riddled with frostbite. Once again joining forces with his Birdman cinematographer/co-conspirator, Emmanuel Lubezki, Inarritu has crafted another must see, technical marvel of a film but unlike their last project, which had heart hidden under layers of bombast, The Revenant; while beautiful, remains joyless and frosty throughout.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Hugh Glass, a 19th century frontiersman who…

    The Hateful Eight 2015

    ★★★★ Watched 30 Dec, 2015

The Hateful Eight, much like it’s oddly brilliant writer/director, is a hard film to pin down. Quentin Tarantino’s eighth feature film finds the firebrand auteur scaling things down in terms of scope from his last two projects, yet filming in ultra huge 70mm and delving even further into the wacky eccentricities that have come to define Tarantino’s unique cinematic universe. Nightcrawler 2014

    ★★★★ Watched 01 Nov, 2014

Jake Gyllenhaal is a fucking mad man. His outstanding, tour de force performance in Nightcrawler will be talked about for ages and will further reinforce this point. We’ve seen traces of brilliance throughout his career [Brokeback Mountain, End of Watch, Prisoners], and we all know Gyllenhaal is at his best playing weirdoes [Donnie Darko, Zodiac, Enemy] and not the pretty boy leading man stuff he’s dabbled with in the past [Prince of Persia…get outta here]. Now we’ve finally been blessed…

Star Wars: The Force Awakens 2015

    ★★★½ Watched 19 Dec, 2015

J.J. Abrams had one job and one job only: avenge us. It’s been a rough two decades for Star Wars fans. The Special Editions in the late 90’s mucked up many of our childhood’s and Episode’s I-III did their best to absolutely ruin the Star Wars legacy at every turn. With Lucas gone and Abrams in charge, would we finally get a decent Star Wars flick or were we doomed to sterilized CGI porn for all eternity? Fear not, Abram’s…
