Warrior 2011 ★★½

Watched Jan 23, 2012

Warrior was not a bad movie. However, when you have watched several of the "downtrodden fighters make good" type of movies, you begin to rate them against each other. I have always been a Rocky fan, cheesy as they might be at times. Warrior almost made me feel like I was watching a poorly put together documentary about an MMA tournament that happened to contain two brothers. The fights that occur in the tournament are played out in such a way that you see the final outcome before you even hear the first bell. Like I said, it wasn't a terrible movie. The drama between the family members helped to drive the story along, and NIck Nolte was his usual intense self, but it seemed way to overdramatized and forced at times, and I felt like I should have been made to feel more invested by the time we reach the climactic fight scene. Where this film contained more actions in the fights, given its MMA appeal, I feel that it could have taken a few tips from The Fighter in terms of pulling you into the story. If you really want to see a great movie about a fighter that fell on hard times, I would recommend that you check out Cinderella Man.

  • What'd you think of this, Jon? I know a few people that thought it was great (and they were not MMA fans, either).

  • I would say to check it out, Jason. It is definitely worth a watch. I have just fallen into a mode of rating movies that I like by whether or not I would want to own the movie... To me, it was good for a one-time viewing...
