13 Ghosts
1960 Directed by William Castle
Synopsis
IT'S FUN TO BE SCARED BY 13 GHOSTS
Reclusive Dr. Zorba has died and left his eerie mansion to his nephew Cyrus Zorba and his family. Along with the house, the Zorba family has also inherited the occultist's collection of 12 ghosts, who can only be seen through Zorba's special goggles. The family members, their lives at risk upon the discovery that Zorba's fortune lies hidden somewhere in the house, receive aid from the unexpected.

There's some pretty effective scares dotted around a very mediocre story, the plotting is typical William Castle stuff which is hard to love - but like every Castle film it proves it can work when it tries. Such a shame this guy never dove into the deep end of horror & always had to show his tongue poking through his cheek.

Probably my least favorite William castle film I've seen so far.

Known for a gimmick and for featuring Margaret Hamilton and making references to her witch character in The Wizard of Oz. 13 Ghosts is not bad but not great either. The main problem I had with this was how the family would shrug things off like something floating as nothing.

Needs more Tingler.

Lame gimmick aside (it still works with 3-D glasses), effectively watchable. Still beats the godawful 2001 remake.

Some scenes were pretty entertaining in a cheesy kind of way, but the overall pacing was a little bit slow even by the era's standards. I get the feeling it would have been better with the illusion-o gimmick in place.

If you find that the opening credits of a film are the most enjoyably stylish/cheesy aspect of the whole movie...it's a bad sign. Just not one of Castle's better efforts.
