13 Tzameti is a film that never quite reaches the heights that it threatens to in its impressively open-ended first half an hour or so. A young man follows instructions meant for someone else in looking for a way out of his dead-end job and to provide a better living for his poor family, and unwittingly ends up in a deadly underworld game.
It starts off Hitchcockian but ends up in Fincher/Roth territory before a pretty disappointing and completely lacklustre climax that suggested to me that Gela Babluani, the director, did not quite know how to finish it.
If he had managed to piece together something a little meatier and we had seen the fates or possible fates of some…

Mystery March Challenge - Week 2
I try not to watch trailers or know too much about movies as I think they are always better when you don't know anything about them. It's hard to live in a bubble when it comes to movies, but 13 Tzameti is a perfect example of a movie being better if you don't know anything about it. I went into this movie blank. (And a good reason to join the Mystery March Challenge). All I knew was that it was a non-English film and a thriller. And that's all anyone should know.
It starts out as a very quite artsy, french, black and white film. Some might see it as boring but it had…

This just wasn't my type of film at all, like I can tell it's well made, but I didn't get anything from it. Perhaps a second watch at some point will help!

I tend to like neo-noir films, but this one never really got farther than "meh" for me. Which is annoying, because it really does have some potential. It starts off really well, but the middle chunk of the film is the best - and trust me when I say the less you know about this film, the better you'll enjoy it. Finding out plot points as the main character finds out are the main sources of tension in the film.
I like the way the movie is filmed, too - the use of fisheye lenses, the black and white, and the editing works well. It's not a poorly made film, but its problems come in its final act: when everything…

Having watched the remake recently (which is great) it was nice to check out the french original ..
And it's fantastic. :) -

A solid 89 minutes. Once the games begin, it shifts a gear and gets very dangerous. Really well acted, especially George Bubliani in the lead. Makes for one very twitchy experience.

A young man contracted to fix the roof on a house comes into possession of a secret envelope that promises riches. The envelope belongs to the master of the house who has overdosed. The young man steals it when the wife tries to rip him off for the job he just did. Is the envelope the key to riches or the road to ruin. Very good noirish thriller.

Americans made a remake. I don't want to comment this. You have to see it even because it was made by Georgians. The atmosphere of crime on black-and-white film leaves unimaginable feeling.
