Christina Ricci and Gaby Hoffmann's accents in this movie are our greatest national treasure.
Oh hey let's just include a transphobic joke in the final moments, because not only do we hate trans women, but we also find them to be afterthoughts. Also, the film shows how seedy the neighborhood is by having black people walk past. Also, I hate watching people smoke cigarettes and find them super gross and I'm sorry to fucking judge you but it makes me not be able to breathe and the smell lingers in my hair for days and keeps making me not able to breathe a long time after you ever smoked it. So gross. But I like Martha Plimpton and Janeane Garofalo and Coutney Love (yes, fight me) and some of the funny stuff in this…
Incredible cast, incredible soundtrack. I fucking love these all in one night films I can't get enough of em.
This film truly doesn’t get enough love, I think each storyline is so charming. It really feels like a time capsule of the late 90s.
I woke up early so I could watch this first and start New Years Eve with the best out of the bunch.
Happy New Year everyone!
So, this is a wannabe Jarmusch affair from 1999 MTV production studios, which for supposedly taking place in 1981/1982, has no more than superficiality when it comes to the aesthetics. This is the perfect time to embrace the Y2k foreboding energy, and frankly never feels like the eighties anyway, so deciding that the 1982 new year was the comparable juxtaposition to the era is... weird. And ineffective. Ah, well. Really the best part is the union of who's who in 1999 [takes deep breath] Paul Rudd, Courtney Love, both Afflecks, Dave Chapelle, Kate Hudson, Martha Plimpton, Christina Ricci, Guillermo Díaz, Janeane Garofalo. Cool locales that do encapsulate NYC from retro diner to punk club to neon…
“I’m just gonna go home and kill myself. you wanna share a cab?”
happy new year’s eve! <3
There's a lot to feel nostalgic about when watching this film - it has an excellent late-90s ensemble cast (Martha Plimpton! Janeane Garofalo! Angela Featherstone!) and the costume department must have had a whale of a time, but it's uncomfortable watching an all-white cast in New York, and Dave Chappelle playing a magical, all-knowing taxi driver named 'Disco Cabbie'. Great soundtrack but, ugh, could have done without that racist crap and later on even some casual transphobia.
Great new wave soundtrack, and I feel sad thinking about how natural Kate Hudson used to come across in films.
Love that moment where Martha Plimpton licks Elvis Costello's glasses.
god this sucked not so bad but a little i have no thoughts about this movie and what i could say and have said is reserved for those who i can trust with intimate knowledge it's just like. if the second act of boogie nights was a gregg araki movie but so so terrible this would be it also a new york club bathroom scene not a line of coke in sight?? i know the writers have never met a gay person in their life
