21 Jump Street
2012 Directed by Phil Lord, Chris Miller
Synopsis
They thought the streets were mean. Then they went back to high school.
In high school, Schmidt was a dork and Jenko was the popular jock. After graduation, both of them joined the police force and ended up as partners riding bicycles in the city park. Since they are young and look like high school students, they are assigned to an undercover unit to infiltrate a drug ring that is supplying high school students synthetic drugs.

I don’t much care for either Jonah Hill nor Channing Tatum, in fact their presence in a film is normally a turnoff, yet 21 Jump Street proves that sometimes two wrongs do actually make a right. This is far from sophisticated, and deliberately relies on well worn stereotypes, yet it wholeheartedly embraces its silliness. Bar the bad language this is a lot closer to directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s animated debut, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, than I had expected. It has the same frantic pacing, madcap humour and likeable characters. The last point is perhaps what separates this from the countless other comedies Jonah Hill stars in because the audience actually warms to these people.
Tatum has…

I liked this movie more when it was called HOT FUZZ. Hell, I liked this movie better when it was called THE OTHER GUYS. Actually, can I just talk about THE OTHER GUYS? That's such a great movie. No? I have to review 21 JUMP STREET? Fine.
Roger Ebert once said that he loved reviewing great movies, and he loved reviewing awful movies, but he hated reviewing mediocre movies. I disagree. I love digging into mediocre films. I love exploring what works and what doesn't. And I completely understand Ebert's feelings. He's a professional critic and his reviews have to flow and make sense and come to a logical conclusion. I don't have to do any of this shit, so…

"You want me to beat your dick off? I'll beat your dick off with both hands, let's go!"
"Hey! Stop fucking with Korean Jesus! He ain't got time for your problems! He busy with Korean shit!"
"One particle of unobtanium has a nuclear reaction with a flux capacitor, carry the two, changing its atomic isotope into a radioactive spider. Fuck you science!"
"You know what they do to handsome guys like me in prison? It rhymes with grape!"
If any of those quotes don't convince you to see the funniest movie you'll see this year, I don't know what will.
I think I'm starting to fall in love with this film. -
I have a science final today, so I just thought I'd remember the best thing this movie taught me:
"Fuck you, science."
EDIT: After finishing the final, I can safely say:
"Fuck you, science."

Captain Dickson: New assignment. Since you two cowboys love to drink booze, smoke weed with kids, and f**k anything with a big ass in jeans with low self-esteem, I'm gonna send you to a place where all that s**t is allowed.
Jenko: Oh, I love Disneyland!
Captain Dickson: You two sons of b**ches are going to college!
Schmidt: Yes!
Jenko: No!Oh, this film. I must have seen the first ten minutes about six or seven times before my first re-watch. And it still holds up. Hollywood comedies are rarely as funny second time round, but this is a big, shining exception to the rule; a film that's funnier when you aren't on a long-haul flight back from Florida.

This movie really surprised me with how funny it was.

I was very surprised by this movie. I actually had a lot of fun watching it, the chemistry between the two lead is great, and there's a lot of good sources of humor like the angry black sergeant. Funny stuff.

This is a movie that acknowledges, embraces and even embellishes its stereotypes. It's self-aware, but not in an in-your-face kind of way. It's much more subtle. The leads work great together and I have to admit that Tatum's comedic talents surprised and impressed me. I had a hell of a good time watching this movie.

The reason 21 Jump Street works so well is that it has, at its core, a real sense of what it is and what it isn’t.

This is my go-to Happy Film.

I have absolutely no previous experience with the television show, so I came to 21 Jump Street fresh with no expectations. It was funny and, like pretty much the rest of the internet has bracingly observed, Channing Tatum was surprisingly humorous outside of his comfort zone of romantic movies.
