As far as pink films go, this one might not even be the most sexist out there, even if a woman literally pretends to be a cow to please a man. It's jarring, though, unpleasant and crude. Its sexist qualities are par for the course, but still offensive. But more than that, the cruel depiction of senility is as much over the edge as the rape and pseudo-incestuous tones. It goes beyond being absurd into being unfortunate. I will admit the Ozu references inherent in this are part of my irritation with it. I admire iconoclasm, but if you're going that route, do so with more than this.
Weirdly, the devotion Noriko has for her father-in-law is almost touching, but…

This is an incredibly strange film, shot like Ozu but with content more akin to, I dunno, maybe early John Waters? The movie looks rather beautiful, and content standards in Japan ensure that the sex scenes are shot in intricate and interesting ways (lots of objects blocking the penetration and creative camera angles). I wouldn't recommend this film to anyone because the content is so bizarre (although this one was recommended to me), but it is a really beautiful and simple film.

Every moving part involved is interesting on its own, perhaps most strikingly obvious is the difference between the content (i.e. a typical pinku film) and the camerawork, which evolves, obfuscates and shifts to create the least erotic experience possible (apparently intentionally, for I can't see anyone making a misstep that large in a film of this ilk); indeed the most stimulating aspect of A Lonely Cow Weeps At Dawn is the intellectual gain in viewing how the choreography of not just the framing but the blocking within the frame helps further portray the animalistic nature of what is being shown - Goto seems incredibly fascinated by the differences between 'humanity' and 'animalistic tendency' and focuses on shattering the bridge between the two entirely.

I remember hearing about this one a while ago, I guess with its premise I was always going to watch it eventually. A senile farmer loses his favourite cow so his daughter in-law pretends to be the cow by letting him milk her breast each morning. They have sex eventually too. Heart warming, surely another victim of being robbed at the Oscars.

From Go, Go, Second Time Virgin, a film that handles sexuality and the affects of rape in a mature and sensitive way to A Lonely Cow Weeps At Dawn. The exact opposite.
A Lonely Cow Weeps At Dawn is one of the worst films I have ever seen, if not the worst. It’s cheap and ugly and attempts to be taboo-breaking for the point of just being taboo-breaking. It begins with a woman stripping naked and acting as though she’s a cow for her senile father, and it only gets worse.
Do not watch this film. At all costs.

This was something unexpected and surprisingly well crafted for a pink movie from the writer/director Daisuke Gotô. Opening scene will probably shock you, but you will not forget it!
The story of Shukichi (Hōryū Nakamura), a senile farmer, who wakes up bright and early to milk his cows, and when he reaches his favourite “cow” – Hanako (translated as “Bessie” in the subtitles) – we see naked Noriko (Ryōko Asagi), a young widow and Shukichi’s daughter-in-law, crouching on all fours, awaiting her milking. The truth is that Shukichi’s beloved cow, as well as his son, have been dead for some years now, but Noriko has kept "Bessie" or Hanako alive. Amazing skills of the director and the actors are shown…

How could I resist a film with such a premise? Oddly arousing and laugh out loud hilarious, especially at the climatic moment where the teary-eyed heroine throws herself on the supine old man and begs to be milked, mooing emphatically. Surprisingly good acting for what essentially amounts to a thinly veiled porno. God damn you Nath, I was busying myself with tasteful films til you lured me back into these murky waters:) In the end however, I've no one to blame but my own perverse inclinations and sick sense of humor.
I recommend you watch this with someone you love. (I wonder how much money I would have to pay Julianne Moore to star in a remake?)

In full disclosure, I saw this film without completed subtitles and had to mostly really on the actor's performances and the official IMDb synopsis to fill in the gaps left by the missing subtitles, but this 2003 "pinku"or "Pink film" directed by Daisuke Goto isn't hard enough, or interestingly shot enough to warrant or elicit a detailed or thorough thread of dissection on my part- instead I'll leave it at this: it's extreme for the sake of being extreme. I'm a huge fan of extremist cinema, and I'm an even bigger fan of Japanese cinema- both it's Kaiju-eiga films predominantly released through the 60's and early 70's (and particularly the 80's and 90's Toho output) and the Chanbara/Jidaigeki genres are…

Another Japanese oddity. Young widow lives with senile farmer father-in-law. His favourite cow has died so to keep him happy she wakes up at 5am every day, strips off and waits in the cow shed to be milked in its place. What sounds like exploitation to an extent is but it's also a film with arthouse heart and it's incredibly sad.
