Synopsis

A Man There Was simply blew me away. What's astonishing is I surprisingly did not think it would, despite Sjöström being one of my favorite directors. See my expectations were not necessarily low but for a film made very early in his career, I was not expecting the caliber of talent he put on display here. On technicality alone this film rivals his seminal masterpiece The Phantom Carriage which would be made four years after this film. So maybe my thoughts were not necessarily of this film being early in Sjöström's career but early in cinema as a whole.
Four years prior to this Sjöström made Ingeborg Holm which looked more like a film from that time period. It was…
