Final day of '5 Days....5 Remakes' (boxd.it/5hJy )
Surprisingly enjoyable! Was good to have Freddy back as a dark, twisted menace rather than a wisecracking clown. Jackie Earle Haley, apart from the iffy make up, was excellent...him licking Nancys face was horrible!
Rooney Mara was also good as Nancy with her usual downbeat, pretty, outsider act. Watching all the kids go from fresh faced and bright to dead eyed sleepless zombies was nicely unsettling.Had some good nods to the original...the bodybag scene...and it made the "I'm your boyfriend now!" line into the real threat it was supposed to be. Although I didn't like their take on the final shot, the films tone made that seem out of place to me.
If this is the last we will see of Freddy Kruger, it wasn't too bad a way to go!

It takes balls to remake a film involving one of the greatest horror icons ever.
It takes brains to do it right.
That would make this all balls and no brains whatsoever....
-
I'd rather dip my balls in a jar of honey and tea-bag a beehive than watch this again.

I think there are both pros and cons attached to this film. I'll try to list them the way I see it, and how it works compared to the original.
Pros:
- Freddy acts and talks like he's royally pissed off. This I think, works really well with making him appear scarier and crazier.
- The whole "dreaming with your eyes open" thing is actually explained as microsleep. In the original and sequels, it kinda just happens, and has been confusing me all through this franchise.
- The opening scene.
- The whole preschool thing works really well.
- No Heather Langenkamp, woop woop!
- No cringe-worthy "funny" one liners from Freddy. THANK GOD!Cons:
- The actor they chose… -
When a movie is as boring and bad as this shitfest, I like to play little games to keep myself company. Tonight's game was called "How would the Elm Street series change if Freddy had a different name?" I came up with a list of suitable and unsuitable alternate names for the ol' Kruegster.
Suitable:
Franky
Tommy
Roger
Charlie
Georgie
Ed
Edd
Eddy
Isaac
Sammy
WillyUnsuitable:
Derrick
Aaron

Julio
Leland

Sugar Tits

The man I blame for my never ending love for horror movies. My one and only, my Freddy.
I hope placebo works this time and 1, 2, freddy's coming for ME.
Katrina, you're fucked up.

A horrible remake of Wes Craven's seminal 1984 shocker about a scar-faced, razor clawed bogeyman who haunts the dreams of suburban teens he intends to slay. Haley does a passable job subbing for Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger but is badly let down by the script and direction that this one takes.
The original was scary because you were never sure whether they was in a dream or real life, but in this version they make sure that you known they are in the dreams all the time, diminishing any real scares. Very disappointing -
Now I'm not a huge fan of the original film, but this one makes me appreciate it all the more.
I've always liked the original film but felt like it never fully capitalised on the possibilities that the premise offers. That's what makes this film all the more disappointing.
First of all, the film is in such a rush to finish that I can't help but feel the moneygrabbing in the film language itself. Now, that's a pretty unusual thing to say, and it isn't something I've felt before but I sure did here. First of all, Freddy is out in the open from the moment the film starts, his face isn't really obscured, it's not that darkly lit, he's…

This review reportedly contains spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Although Haley does a great job he feels very different to the Freddy I know and love and as a remake it is beyond upsetting. As a film it has poor pacing and too many 'suspense' moments that seem to desensitize you to any actual suspense - mildly enjoyable despite its flaws.

Ultimately what hurts this film is the terrible acting in the first half and how they rush the story along. It only took them about 10 minutes to figure out what was going on. The second half does try to redeem itself and almost succeeds. Jackie Earle Haley tries but I don't think anyone will ever amount to the character Robert Englund defined so many years ago. I can respect the film makers for trying to go for a more serious movie it really suffers in the end. I'd rather watch the original in all it's cheesy 80's glory.

It's films like this that make you wonder why people bother remaking great movies.
Congrats Hollywood.
(Congrats here being a loose term for bugger off, I never want to watch this shit again.)

Just thought this was okay when first saw it in theaters. Watching again appreciate it more, pretty solid remake that goes back to the series' darker roots then makes them even darker, although some of the scares get repetitive.
