A Perfect Getaway
2009 Directed by David Twohy
Synopsis
Welcome to paradise. Enter at your own risk.
For their honeymoon, newlyweds Cliff and Cydney head to the tropical islands of Hawaii. While journeying through the paradisaical countryside the couple encounters Kale and Cleo, two disgruntled hitchhikers and Nick and Gina, two wild but well-meaning spirits who help guide them through the lush jungles. The picturesque waterfalls and scenic mountainsides quickly give way to terror when Cliff and Cydney learn of a grisly murder that occurred nearby and realize that they're being followed by chance acquaintances that suspiciously fit the description of the killers.

Unexpectedly enjoyable and tightly plotted, David Twohy proves he's more than Vin Diesel's lap dog. It's a shame he hasn't directed more movies since impressing so much with early offerings Pitch Black and The Arrival. Even on a re-watch there's surprisingly little opportunity to pick at potential plot holes, such is it's solid structure, aided by satisfying performances from the core cast. No mean feat when it's basically a compact chase through some woods. Slick.

A few days off watching films (or anything) after a new baby arrival ended by a film we only watched a few weeks ago anyway. Well, it was on Channel 5 and there was nothing else on.
It's really good and rewards repeat viewings despite knowing the twist but it's only when you rewatch it that you realise there are almost no holes to pick in the film before the twist / revelation. It really is as intricately plotted as you could ask for from a film such as this.
Plus, Steve Zahn really is a terrific and reliable actor, isn't he? Not a guy you're going to ask to headline a film, usually, but here he shows he is strong enough given the right material. I place this next to Triangle as a mystery thriller released in the last couple of years or so that deserved a much better reception and audience.

I wasn’t too fond of this the first time I watched it, but after seeing it again I really have no idea why. An expertly plotted little vacation thriller from writer/director David Twohy, A Perfect Getaway is the rare “big twist” film that is about so much more than just its major reveal. While I think the twist itself is ingeniously written, the film is a rarity due to the fact that knowing the truth doesn’t rob it of any of its strength. Rather, I found it to be substantially more impressive watching it a second time, knowing the truth and being able to see the brilliant way that Twohy lets it all play out before the reveal.

In a movie that is essentially just people walking around in the woods for almost two hours, the great cast and great writing keep you not only entertained, but sucked in. One of the few movies I felt I had to watch again as soon as it ended. Good stuff.

Plays fair the whole way through all its ups and downs and turns arounds with plenty to say about story and acting along with those thrills and dark jokes.

This is one of those films whose plot is away from complicated. Everything seems to be served on silver plates, no hassles, no witty comprehension required. It really is a getaway in terms of entertainment, it may look plain and cheap at the beginning but gradually, you’ll notice that this film really worth every dime spent. You will get sucked up into the plot as it heightens and tension built towards the ending. One thing that this film really sells is nonetheless the ending, I know that I seem to repeat the current guru’s statement but hell yea, it’s very smart. The ending is like a direct punch to your stomach for you wouldn’t likely guess how it ends.

A smart, unique and well made thriller. The story will keep you guessing the entire time. The twist ending was very good even if partly predictable. So, aslong as you don't think too much you should enjoy this action packed, twisted thriller.

This review reportedly contains spoilers. I can handle the truth.

"Nothing exists until I get there." Fractured realities and wicked knife fights make for a pretty smart and effective action/thriller. Some weak dialogue, but fun overall.

Twohy is an underrated craftsman. We should be so lucky to have thrillers like this around.

Interesting... to a point. Better than I expected... to a point. Basically the film is a mildly engaging psychological thriller and then in the last 20 minutes IT LOSES ITS MIND and almost retroactively ruins all that came before it. It barely recovers its bout with insanity and ends up being serviceable but nothing more.

Very underated! T. O. is one of my favorite actors! He is excellent in Justified also! Very pretty movie to watch also! Never a boring moment!

Joon's Movie Night pick for "In Defense of..." Almost worth seeing for a gleefully entertaining Timothy Olyphant performance, but the film lacks flavor in the long build-up to a wild third act.
