The Tangshan Earthquake which occurred in Chima in 1976 was probably the earthquake that caused most deaths in th e20th century. We see a happy family of mother, father and young twins shortly before the earthquake destroys their home. Father is killed and the twins are trapped underground. Mother is told by the rescuers that freeing one will kill the other and she is forced to choose which child survives. She chooses her son, and believes that her daughter has died. This is not however the case, and many years later the twins are reunited by chance after another earthquake. A film about guilt, remorse and forgiveness, a film which is probably better than 7/10, but which has probably in large part flown over my head as I don't know enough about Chinese film and culture.

was china's entry into oscars a few years ago picked the film up on the cheap on dvd, ok the cgi of earthquake may not be hollywood standards but was alot more believable than typical hollywood affair. i enjoyed it, but as usual too many people don't like subtitles which is a shame as there's loads of films non english that are superior to some of the rubbish we have to put up with

A bit heavy-handed in the way a lot of Chinese films tend to be, but totally tragic and really gets to you. I cried a little bit. Great performances, save for the incredibly awkward acting and creepy inappropriate smile from the only foreign guy. Seriously, what was up with that?

This movie was about the Great Tangshan Earthquake in China in 1976, and as fiction as this movie was it was actually quite interesting. The subtitles weren't too bad, about 90% was accurate.
My dad had told me that this Earthquake was a major disaster and he was surprised that I knew nothing about this incident. But this movie was a good heart felt of a movie and I got to hear my friend Aria cry :P

In 1976, a devastating earthquake struck the industrial city of Tangshan, in Hebei province China, killing approximately 255,000 people, and scattering the survivors and orphans.
While this film fictionalizes the event - utilizing a "Sophie's Choice" dramatic device to cruel effect - the reality of the past haunts the story, smoothing rough narrative edges and structural flaws somewhat. It's not a perfect film by a long shot, but it lingers in the mind like the grief that haunts Tangshan to this very day.
