Air America
1990 Directed by Roger Spottiswoode
Synopsis
The few. The proud. The totally insane.
Air America was the CIA's private airline operating in Laos during the Vietnam War, running anything and everything from soldiers to foodstuffs for local villagers. After losing his pilot's license, Billy Covington is recruited into it, and ends up in the middle of a bunch of lunatic pilots, gun-running by his friend Gene Ryack, and opium smuggling by his own superiors.

(Film 5 of Toby's Attempt At The December Project)
Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. unofficially running cargo in Laos during Vietnam. What's not to like? Gibson is at his sarcastic best here and at times, it feels like he's passing the torch to Downey. And because it's a Vietnam movie, we get a decent soundtrack as well.
Yeah, this December challenge seems to be going pretty good so far.

A Vietnam war buddy movie. And who wouldn't want to be buddies with Mel Gibson or Robert Downey JR?
This is a cinematic duo that could have, and should have made more films together.

Pretty aimless at times with some overall tone problems. Gibson and RDJ kept me from doing something else with my time.

An enjoyable look at what the CIA were supposed to be up to before during and after Vietnam War. It follows a group of crazy pilots landing on mountains and running drugs and guns and is done with a healthy dose of comedy while giving details of a heinous situation. I only wish it had gone one way or the other, truly dramatic or full slapstick comedy, much in the same vein as Good Morning Vietnam. Well worth a watch even if it is just for Mel Gibson before he blew his career out his ass.

It is like Catch 22 except in Vietnam.

Decent comedy adventure.
